With the invention of the telescope, suddenly the universe didn’t seem so far away. Galileo, an Italian scholar in the 1600s, took advantage of this new device by pointing it toward the sky. Through the telescope, the moons and planets looked clearer and closer. Galileo could see that the moon had a rough surface dotted with craters. He also found the Milky Way galaxy. In addition, Galileo observed that Earth appeared to circle the sun instead of the other way around. These discoveries reshaped how people thought about space and Earth’s place in it. Meanwhile the desire to express myself grew. The few signs I used became less and less adequate, and my failures to make myself understood were invariably followed by outbursts of passion. I felt as if invisible hands were holding me, and I made frantic efforts to free myself. I struggled—not that struggling helped matters, but the spirit of resistance was strong within me; I generally broke down in tears and physical exhaustion. If my mother happened to be near I crept into her arms, too miserable even to remember the cause of the tempest. After awhile the need of some means of communication became so urgent that these outbursts occurred daily, sometimes hourly.


My parents were deeply grieved and perplexed. We lived a long way from any school for the blind or the deaf, and it seemed unlikely that any one would come to such an out-of-the-way place as Tuscumbia to teach a child who was both deaf and blind. Indeed, my friends and relatives sometimes doubted whether I could be taught. My mother's only ray of hope came from Dickens's "American Notes." She had read his account of Laura Bridgman, and remembered vaguely that she was deaf and blind, yet had been educated. But she also remembered with a hopeless pang that Dr. Howe, who had discovered the way to teach the deaf and blind, had been dead many years. His methods had probably died with him; and if they had not, how was a little girl in a far-off town in Alabama to receive the benefit of them?

Story:

The men of Scotland were led by Robert Bruce. English troops had invaded their country. Bruce had bravely fought them with his gallant men, but now he stumbled into a refuge and threw himself down on the floor. He was so very tired of the war. It seemed as though he could not succeed against the invaders.

A lonely Bruce sat and thought and then, in great despair decided, "I'll give it all up."

Just then a spider dropped down from the ceiling, interrupting his thoughts. Bruce wondered what the spider would do. From floor to ceiling was a long way back to the spider's home.

The spider began to crawl up its silvery rope, but slipped and fell again to the ground. Time and again the spider tried to reach its home, but each time it fell, dazed and faint.

After Robert Bruce counted nine attempts, he was sure the spider would try no more. The determined spider, however, worked harder than before. Slowly he got higher and higher until he reached the top. Robert Bruce shouted his praise for the worthy spider.

Then and there Robert Bruce decided he also would not give up. He would keep trying until he should succeed in ridding his country of its terrible enemy. He finally did and became King Robert I of Scotland.
