Once an iron merchant, called Krishnan, had to leave his home and go to

a distant city on some important business. He would be away for more than

six months. In his godown, he had about a ton of iron bars. It was a great

problem to know what to do with them. He could not keep them locked up in

the godown, for then he would not only have to pay a large rent, but also the

wages of a watchman for six long months. Moreover, when he returned prices

might have fallen and he would then have to sell the bars at a very great loss.

Obviously the best thing to do was to sell them before he went away,

but though he tried hard to find a customer, no one seemed to want to buy

them.

One of his friends, called Gopal, was also a dealer in iron. He also had a godown

where he kept his raw iron for sale as and when he found customers.

His godown was very large and he could easily keep Krishnan’s bars in

one corner. He told Krishnan that he could safely leave the iron in his

godown and go on his journey. It would all be there when he came back.

Krishnan decided to do this. He thanked his friend Gopal for his kindness,

sent him the iron, and left the town with a light heart.

Source 1: Single-sex Education: The Pros and Cons
By Kristin Stanberry

Single-sex education (teaching boys and girls in separate classrooms or schools) is an old approach that’s gaining new momentum. While single-sex education has long existed in many private schools, it’s a relatively new option for public schools. The National Association for Single-Sex Public Education estimates that approximately 400 public schools now offer some form of single-sex education. What is fueling this movement? And what are the risks and benefits of single-sex education?
A driving force in the single-sex education movement is recent research showing natural differences in how males and females learn. Putting this research into practice, however, has triggered a debate that extends beyond pure academics. Political, civil rights, socioeconomic and legal concerns also come into play.
Before weighing the pros and cons of single-sex education, consider the influences of “nature versus nurture.” Many factors affect each child’s learning profile and preferences:
Some factors relate to the child’s nature, such as gender, temperament, abilities (and disabilities), and intelligence.
Other influences stem from the way parents and society nurture the child: Family upbringing, socioeconomic status, culture and stereotypes all fall under the “nurture” category.
Some parents don’t want their children to be in mixed-gender classrooms because, especially at certain ages, students of the opposite sex can be a distraction.
Leonard Sax, founder of the National Association for Single-Sex Public Education, and others agree that merely placing boys in separate classrooms from girls accomplishes little. But single-sex education enhances student success when teachers use techniques geared toward the gender of their students.
Some research and reports from educators suggest that single-sex education can broaden the educational prospects for both girls and boys. Advocates claim co-ed schools tend to reinforce gender stereotypes, while single-sex schools can break down gender stereotypes. For example, girls are free of the pressure to compete with boys in male-dominated subjects such as math and science. Boys, on the other hand, can more easily pursue traditionally “feminine” interests such as music and poetry. One mother, whose daughter has attended a girls-only school for three years, shared her experience on the GreatSchools parent community: “I feel that the single gender environment has given her a level of confidence and informed interest in math and science that she may not have had otherwise.”
The fact remains that there are relatively few single-sex schools in our nation’s public education system, and where they do exist, they are offered as an option rather than a requirement. If the single-sex education movement continues, you may find yourself in a position to vote for or against it in your own community.

I just don't see how we could possibly consider selling the cabin that Grandpa built by hand. What price could we put on his sweat? How can we cash in our many memories of spending summers there? Most of all, how can we rob our own children of this unique family tradition?

Passage 2: If we choose to keep
Grandpa's cabin, we will have to invest a considerable amount of money and work into it. The roof has been leaking for years, and the electrical system is not up to code. And now that our generation is having children of our own, the cabin is not large enough to fit our entire family for get-togethers anyway. I WAS SITTING IN a taxi, wondering if I had overdressed for the evening, when I looked out the window and saw Mom rooting through a Dumpster. It was just after dark. A blustery March wind whipped the steam coming out of the manholes, and people hurried along the sidewalks with their collars turned up. I was stuck in traffic two blocks from the party where I was heading.  Mom stood fifteen feet away. She had tied rags around her shoulders to keep out the spring chill and was picking through the trash while her dog, a blackandwhite terrier mix, played at her feet. Mom's gestures were all familiar—the way she tilted her head and thrust out her lower lip when studying items of potential value that she'd hoisted out of the Dumpster, the way her eyes widened with childish glee when she found something she liked.

- Medicine Grizzlybear Lake, "An Indian Father's Plea"
Why is this passage from "An Indian Father's Plea" an example of Lake's use
of logos?
A. Because it appeals to the feelings and emotions of the audience
B. Because it shows that his son comes from a strange and
unfamiliar culture
C. Because it uses an expert source to explain an element of his
son's culture
D. Because it uses specific evidence to support his argument

Answers

Answer:

D). Because it uses specific evidence to support his argument.

Explanation:

'Logos' is characterized as one of the three persuasive devices(as described by Aristotle) that aims to convince the readers by appealing to them logically. He calls it a 'reasoned discourse' where the author establishes the validity of the argument by providing adequate evidence like facts, citations, specific data, etc. to substantiate the claim.

As per the question, the given passage exemplifies Lake's use of logos as it involves particular evidence to back the claim mentioned in the argument. The factual description of 'the way in which a newborn is initiated to the natural world aiming to display respect to him' logically supports the claim of placing the Wind-wolf in a secured basket and holding the ceremony to get along with it. Thus, it appeals to the readers' reasoning/logic and they believe the claim to be true. Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

Answer: Decreases

Explanation:

This is based on the Kelly call to action essay. In sentence 17, it was not enough that Kelly used ''changes'' to show that the quantity was changing, it would have been better if Kelly showed just how it was changing.

As the quantity was reducing it would be best to use ''decreases'' to show that the type of change that was going on was one that saw the quantity decrease.

Read the passage. Once you have read the story, explain what episodes show the resolution of the story. Explain your answer in one or two sentences.

Laurel woke up to the sound of her banging alarm. She was startled, but excited to start her first day of middle school. Her outfit was ready, and her lunch was packed. She even bought new pens and notebooks for the new school year.

As she sat on the bus in her new clothes, she started to feel nervous. What if she didn’t like her teachers? What if middle school was too hard? What if she didn’t have anyone to sit with at lunch? Laurel could feel her stomach churning with fear. Then at the next stop, her best friend, Norma, got on the bus. As Norma sat right next to her, Laurel knew everything would be okay as long as she had her best friend.

Answers

Explanation:

The resolution of this story is; Laurel calming down due to her friends appearance.

The story begins with Laurel getting ready and prepared for school. (Sort of like a prologue) A prologue explains the setting and idea of the story, it could also introduce the main character who is Laurel. Then comes the "climax". The climax is the highest point in the story, it mainly leads to the resolution. Laurel sat on the bus and began worrying, would her teachers like her? Who would she sit with at lunch? Then we revisit the resolution, "As Norma sat right next to her, Laurel knew everything would be okay".

HURRYYYYYY i need a paragraph long repsonse to "yes kids should play contact sports" like stat please

Answers

Answer:

Getting kids off the sofa and onto the sports pitch brings a wide variety of physical, mental and social skills which will bode well for them as they reach adulthood and beyond.

And obviously, we would say that. But in order to prove our point, we've compiled no less than 9 reasons why kids should get off the sofa and play some sport.

1. Improve physical health

Forgive me for starting with the obvious, but sport brings physical health benefits to anyone who takes to the field – and children are no different.

According to to Public Health England's 2014/15 child obesity figures, 9.1% of 4-5 year olds are obese, with that figure rising to 19.1% for children aged 10-11.

The importance of getting kids out playing sport first starts with the physical advantages, and given the figures – it's clearly important to get them involved as young as possible.

You can never just expect their experiences in PE to fuel a want for more sport - it needs to be supported with recreational sport.

Rather than reminiscing about how you never wasted so much time in-front of the TV as a child, ensure your kids are enthused and excited by sport, and all the health benefits will immediately follow.

2. Lifelong well-being

The older a child gets involved in sport, the less-likely they are to consider it an important part of their lives, and the less chance you'll have of securing their interest as they progress into adulthood.

Sport is a great avenue for promoting a healthy lifestyle, and this feeds into a number of other areas of life. For example, those who consistently play sport are more likely to be aware of the healthy food choices they need to make in order to perform.

As an adult, your position as a positive role-model is vital. Make healthy lifestyle choices and promote regular exercise as a parent, and your children are likely to follow suit.

The physical advantages to playing sport are well-documented, but that's not the only boost you'll get to your well-being by getting out and about. A fit and active body has been proven to translate into a fit and active mind. Reduce stress and increase mental health by getting you kids active.

All these factors roll together to help children build a healthy state of well-being that will last them a lifetime.

3. Develop social skills

Developing social skills is another huge part of parenting, and one that again needs to be developed at a young age if the benefits are to be reaped in the future.

One of the best ways to develop a child's social skills is through getting involved in sport, particularly team-based activities. Communicating new ideas, listening to others as part of a group, and using communication to solve problems by working as a team – just a few of the things children learn from getting involved in sport.

On top of that, a child can grow into the first leadership role of their lives by taking a captains role in a sports team. Again, exposing children to environments where communication is key pay-offs big time in the future. Their conversational skills and ability to play a role in a team or as a leader will come in handy as an adult in the future.

4. Build self-esteem and confidence

Moving slightly back to the development of personal, social-based skills, self-esteem and confidence are two further areas where children can benefit through the means of sport.

5. It could even go somewhere...

As a child, it was always my dream to step out at Lords as an opening batsman. Unfortunately, my dreams were scuppered by one tiny barrier – talent. Still, using that dream as a motivational tool was great for feeding my enthusiasm for sport, and for some the dream does come true.

Competition for places on the professional sporting ladder is fierce, and it probably isn't wise to start convincing your child that they're the next Lionel Messi or Dan Carter. But growing their love for sport by watching how the elite go about it is great for aspirational reasons, and will ensure they stick around in sport for the long-term.

Help your child look at sport from a positive frame of mind, looking to emulate their favourite sportsmen and women out on the field – rather than it being a chore they don't enjoy. It'll fuel their willingness to work, improve and succeed.

1. PART A: Which of the following best describes a central idea of the text?
O A The human race is evolving beyond the need for petty fighting.
OB Above all, soldiers duties are to serve and protect their country.
C Soldiers should never question others or engage in politics.
D The only way to ensure global peace is through waging war.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

A

The best description of a central idea of the text is A. The human race is evolving beyond the need for petty fighting.

The central idea of the text might be discussing the need for global peace and offering reasons for the many needless fights and wars that human beings engage in.

Therefore, it does not see the reason for all the petty fighting that is going on among different human races.

Thus, the correct description of the central idea cannot be about the recognized duties and responsibilities of soldiers, nor is it to propose wars as means of achieving global peace.

Analyze Thurber is known for his humor and wit. How does he convey
humor in this story? Cite details from the text to support your response

Answers

Answer:

Thurber conveyed humor in this story by making weird interpretations of the characters in the story. The next morning when Thurber met the American woman, he said, "The reason Duncan resembled Lady Macbeth's father as he slept is that it actually was her father!” “Good God!" breathed my companion softly. In this statement, Thurber attributed the death of the King to Lady Macbeth's father who appeared once in the story and this surprised the American woman.

Explanation:

Thurber used humor in this story, a skill employed by writers to make the story fun and evoke laughter by giving unusual interpretation of events in the story. When the American woman was suspecting Macduff as the person who killed the King, Thurber came with an entirely different interpretation the next morning stating that it was Lady Macbeth's father who made just one appearance in the story that killed the King.

When the woman asked him who he suspected since he was going to buy Hamlet, he said "Everybody". These were funny and weird behaviors of Thurber.
