14. What did Oedipus do when he learned he had fulfilled the Oracle's prophecies?

Answers

Answer 1

When Oedipus learned that he had fulfilled the Oracle's prophecies, he was devastated and horrified by his actions.

The Oracle had predicted that he would kill his father and marry his mother, and he had unknowingly done just that. In his grief and shame, Oedipus gouged out his own eyes as a symbol of his blindness to the truth and his inability to face the reality of his actions

Despite his self-punishment, Oedipus continued to suffer the consequences of his actions. He was banished from his city, Thebes, and his family was torn apart. His wife/mother Jocasta killed herself in despair, and his two sons fought over the throne, ultimately leading to their own deaths.

Oedipus' story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of fate and the consequences of actions taken without knowledge of their full implications. It also highlights the importance of self-reflection and the willingness to face the truth, no matter how painful.

Oedipus' decision to blind himself was a drastic one, but it demonstrated his willingness to take responsibility for his actions and to suffer the consequences of his mistakes.

True or False - Finding full time, permanent jobs is harder in 2018 than it was in 1989.

Answers

Answer: This statement is false.

Explanation: This statement is false due to one main reason - there are many, many more opportunities than there were originally for a citizen to find a permanent job. As of 2023 there are plenty of jobs to turn into a career/livelihood that requires no absolute experience (2 year college degree, associate's, bachelor's, etc) and one is namely fast food. Fast food services are helping more and more people develop careers in the world owning stores (Mcdonalds, White castles). You can even find a permanent job as a crew manager.

In the past it may have been easy to find a full time job, but finding a job that you can actually sustain that supplies your livelihood without you having to struggle was not inherently the norm.

Read the quote and answer the questions that follow: "Sir, the war you won is over," the sheik said. "That war you won. It was not beautiful in the end - there were no violins, no birds singing in the sky - but it is over. What is going on now is a completely different war. In this war you merely stand on the side and hold the coats. This war is not about you or America." Why does he emphasize that the end of the war was not beautiful

A. He is referring to the number of people killed by the U.S. bombing forces.
B. He is making the point that they may not have noticed the end of the first war because of the lack of celebration
C. He is making the connection that there are no birds in the sky because the planes are still flying overhead and bombing
D. He is implying that the U.S. Military forces behaved badly throughout the first stages of the war

Answers

According to the information, we can infer that the author emphasize that the end of the war was not beautiful because he is making the point that they may not have noticed the end of the first war because of the lack of celebration.

Why does the author emphasize that the end of the war not beautiful?

The sheik's emphasis on the lack of beauty in the end of the war is not specifically tied to the number of casualties caused by the U.S. bombing forces (A), the ongoing presence of planes and bombing (C), or the behavior of the U.S. Military forces (D).

Instead, the sheik is highlighting the absence of traditional signs of celebration, such as violins and birds singing in the sky, to convey that the conclusion of the war did not bring about a sense of joy or relief.

By suggesting that they may not have even noticed the end of the war, he underscores the contrast between the lackluster conclusion of the previous war and the ongoing conflict that is now unfolding.

Alice said afterwards she had never seen such a fuss made about anything in all her life—the way those two bustled about—and the quantity of things they put on—and the trouble they gave her in tying strings and fastening buttons—"Really they'll be more like bundles of old clothes than anything else, by the time they're ready!" she said to herself, as she arranged a bolster round the neck of Tweedledee, "to keep his head from being cut off," as he said.

"You know," he added very gravely, "it's one of the most serious things that can possibly happen to one in a battle—to get one's head cut off. "

The line that implies that Alice finds Tweedledee and Tweedledum's battle preparations quite silly is: "Do I look very pale?" said Tweedledum, coming up to have his helmet tied on. (He CALLED it a helmet, though it certainly looked much more like a saucepan. )

Alice replied gently, "Well—yes—a little." This suggests that she finds their behavior quite ridiculous, as they are taking their preparations for battle very seriously, even though they are two small, harmless creatures. Tweedledee's response to Alice's comment is also quite amusing, as he claims that he is "far worse off" than Alice, even though she has a toothache.

When Tweedledee comes up to have his helmet tied on, he asks Alice if he looks pale. Alice replies that he does look a little pale, which suggests that she finds his behavior quite strange. She then goes on to say that he has a headache, which adds to the absurdity of his behavior, as he is preparing for a battle with a headache.

There are several lines in Shakespeare's play "Romeo Rhyming and Juliet" that end in rhymes. Act I, Scene 1. These lyrics have a sing-song style that is reminiscent of nursery songs for kids.

For instance, the Chorus' first words are, "Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean, / Where ancient grudge break to new mutiny.!"

Here, the words "mutiny" and "unclean" rhyme, producing an easy-to-follow beat. These lyrics' apparent innocence stands in contrast to the play's dark and violent themes. 12 Angry Men Creative Writing

Using the Script from Reginald Rose's "12 Angry Men" as as guide, create a scene that follows one of the jurors out of the courthouse and back into the "real world" to share the day they've had with someone they meet.

Writing in the style of a dramatic script, the juror should describe what they've been through that day and how they feel about it.

Maybe your juror comes home and greets his family, telling them what happened that day. Maybe he goes out to a restaurant or bar and tells the servers working there what he saw in the Jury Room and how it made him feel. He might even follow the newly-freed defendant out of the courthouse to see where he goes. Could he end up talking to him or confronting him?! You're the playwright!

In any case, the jurors and the character(s) they meet should interact using a script and stage directions. You will be writing in the style of the play, using similar dialogue, physical actions, and scene descriptions to explain what's happening. This is NOT simply a creative narrative! It's an extension of the play!

Your scene should demonstrate knowledge of the play and the specifics of the juror. Many of these jurors are distinct with specific characteristics, so they will speak and act in a certain way, showing individual feelings and reactions to what's happened. The dialogue and stage directions should show that you understand your chosen juror and what he's been through!

An example has been provided as a "Source" for you to use as a reference on HOW to write a scripted dialogue. Failure to follows this format will result in a reduction to your Writing Style score!

Script Format Example

EVENING, Summer 1957

A sidewalk outside a New York City courthouse

It is the end of the long, hot day in the city. A solitary old man walks down the sidewalk. Streetlights are coming on and shoppers and workers are headed home. The single man bumps into a man in a suit headed in the other direction.

Both men stumble backwards.

Man: Hey, old man! Watch where you're going! The man in the suit brushes his suit jacket off.

Juror Nine: Oh, excuse me! I didn't see you there! It's getting dark! The old man holds up a hand apologetically.

Man: Wait! I know you, you're one of the jurors from that murder case! Could I ask you a few questions about what happened in there?

Juror Nine: I'd love to tell you, but it may take some time...

The two men walk down the street as they talk.

Answers

To write a script of this nature use the main features of script writing to introduce drama in the story. Stage direction can also be used to further portray the actions of the juror.

How to write the script

To write this script, you need to read the story, The 12 Angry Men to first understand the plot. Next, you have to use simple language to demonstrate the juror's action as he walks out of the courtroom.

Stage directions would also be used to further demonstrate the actions and they should be enclosed in parentheses. For instance, (The juror walks angrily out of the courtroom). This stage direction shows the manner in which the juror exits.

The excerpt suggests that the narrator avoids discussing his war experiences directly with his daughter, opting to write war stories instead. Option A.

The given excerpt from "Ambush" provides context to the rest of the selection by showcasing the narrator's approach to discussing his war experiences, particularly with his daughter. When his daughter questions him about his war stories and suggests that he must have killed someone, the narrator faces a difficult moment.

Instead of delving into the details of his own experiences, he chooses a different path.

The excerpt indicates that the narrator denies having killed somebody, responding to his daughter by saying, "Of course not." This suggests that he does not want to share the harsh realities of war directly with her at that moment.

Instead, he takes her onto his lap and holds her, offering comfort and reassurance. This action implies that the narrator recognizes the sensitivity of discussing such matters with a young child and chooses to protect her innocence.

The context provided by the excerpt suggests that the narrator turns to writing war stories as a way to indirectly express his experiences and emotions.

By transforming his war experiences into fictional narratives, he may find a means of processing his own feelings and exploring the complexities of war while maintaining a certain level of distance from the direct discussion of his own actions. This approach allows him to navigate the difficult balance between sharing his stories and protecting his daughter from the harsh realities of war.

In summary, the excerpt indicates that the narrator chooses to avoid discussing his war experiences directly with his daughter and instead writes war stories as a way to convey his experiences and emotions indirectly. So Option A is correct.

In Act III of Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible," Danforth is interrogating Proctor about his reasons for not attending church regularly and for not baptizing his youngest son. Proctor responds by admitting to his sins but refusing to confess to witchcraft, which he did not commit. Danforth sees Proctor's refusal to confess as an act of rebellion against the court and the government, rather than an expression of his innocence. Danforth believes that the court's authority depends on people's willingness to confess, and Proctor's defiance threatens to undermine that authority. Danforth accuses Proctor of being motivated by a desire to overthrow the court and the government, rather than by a commitment to the truth.

What social commentary does Mark Twain make in "The ?1,000,000 Bank-Note"? Include examples from the text to support your answer.

ANSWER:

In "The £1,000,000 Bank-Note," Twain uses satire to highlight the power of money and its influence on the behavior of people from all classes of nineteenth-century English society. The earliest examples of satire in the text are when Henry meets the owners of the eating house and the tailor shop. Both owners regard Henry as an upper-class gentleman and allow him to make purchases on credit based on his perceived status. In fact, when Henry warns the proprietor of the tailor shop that he may have to wait an indefinite amount of time for his dues to be paid, the proprietor doesn’t seem concerned at all. He says, "Indefinitely! It’s a weak word, sir, a weak word. Eternally—that’s the word, sir. " The proprietor’s use of the word eternally stresses his willingness to allow Henry to make purchases on credit. Other shop owners also accept that Henry is rich, providing him with both necessities and luxuries on credit alone. If any of the proprietors had known about Henry’s true financial condition, they wouldn’t have allowed him any amount of credit; however, they still gave him whatever he wanted or needed because they believed his million-pound note meant he was someone of class and wealth.

Twain further satirizes the importance the English placed on money in the nineteenth century when he shows how much respect Henry has garnered across London. When Henry hears about his friend Lloyd’s financial troubles, he tells Lloyd to use the reputation of Henry’s name to help sell Lloyd’s mine. Henry says, "I know all about that mine, of course; I know its immense value, and can swear to it if anybody wishes it. You shall sell out inside of the fortnight for three million cash, using my name freely, and we'll divide, share and share alike. " Less than a day later, all of London is talking about the mine that Henry is vouching for. Finally, "when the month was up at last," the mine was purchased, and Henry and Lloyd had a million dollars each. Because Lloyd had used Henry’s name to sell the mine, no one questioned that the mine was valuable. Henry’s reputation is so secure at this point in the story that he now has the power to actually affect London society. Although he started out poor and hungry, Henry has not only been able to gain the appearance of wealth and status by simply showing his million-pound note, but he’s also been able to achieve some amount of real power. Twain’s satire shows how ridiculous and dangerous it can be to trust someone based solely on money—or, in this case, on the appearance of having money. Instead of judging Henry on real qualities, such as kindness, honesty, or wisdom, London society chooses to judge him based on what they think he has: money and, subsequently, class

Answers

The given statement "to cite an entry in an encyclopedia use the instead of the author name as the opening item in the citation" is TRUE because when citing an entry in an encyclopedia, you typically use the title of the entry instead of the author's name as the opening item in the citation.

This is because many encyclopedia entries are written by various authors or may even be anonymous.

In such cases, the title serves as the primary identifier for the cited source.

. . . [R]eading from a book each night before bed according to Jang encourages the brain to remember the text?
“Reading from a book each night before bed (according to Jang) encourages the brain to remember the text”.

Answers

The answer to reflect the proper punctuation is quote B, “Reading from a book each night before bed,” according to Jang, “encourages the brain to remember the text.”

How to punctuate quotes

When punctuating quotes, like the one mentioned in the prompt, there are a couple of things we must keep in mind. First, we need to enclose the quoted text within double quotation marks and, in most cases, commas and periods should be placed inside the closing quotation marks.

If the question mark or exclamation mark is part of the quoted text, it should be placed inside the closing quotation marks. However, if it applies to the overall sentence and not specifically to the quoted text, it should be placed outside the closing quotation marks. If you need to include a quote within a quote, use single quotation marks for the nested quotation. When attributing the quote to someone, use a comma to separate the quote from the attribution, and capitalize the first letter of the quote if it is a complete sentence.

With all that in mind, it is possible to conclude that option B is the right answer.
