A band student has written an opinion piece arguing that all extracurricular activities should be required to hold fundraisers to pay for their activities.

Answers

Answer:

I think it's an objective opinion.

Explanation:

I think it's an objective opinion because the statement that they made about the fundraisers seems factual and reasonable and their opinion doesn't seem to be biased and/or based on their feelings. People should be able to raise money at fundraisers to pay for their activities. Once again this is a pretty reasonable claim to make that doesn't seem to be based on the person's feelings.

Was the barber either right or wrong in his decision to not kill Captain Torres?

Please include Logos (intellectual appeal of your argument) and Ethos (ethical appeal of your argument)

Please write as much as you can, maybe a paragraph form if you can?

Book: Just Lather, That's All

Answers

Answer:

I Disagree with the Barbers decision not to kill Captain Torres. True it would be difficult to take the life of another human. However, would it not be worse to let a man live so that he or those who he commands may mutilate, torture and then kill an infinite number of people under his command. Put in the barbers position i would not view the death of this man as murder, rather that of an act of retribution. He was a sadistic man who gained pleasure from the death of the rebels. He proves this when he tells the Barber when he says, "Without any effort I could go straight to sleep." Despite the horrible deaths he saw and was responsible for. Also when asked what he plans for the 14 remaining rebels he reply's with, "I don't know yet. But we'll amuse ourselves," as if it is a game. I believe that this man deserved to die so that others may live despite the consequences for the greater good.

The effects on families
During WWII an estimated 200,000 or more Japanese people were killed and a lot were left homeless. Due to this, as well as the firebombing of Tokyo and fathers being in the military, many families were torn apart and separated from each other. In the movie, Seita and Setsuko’s father was in the military and they were separated from their mother after she died due to the firebombings. All families were under a lot of stress. They had to look after each other and only got small, indecent rations of food to share around. Some families looked after the children of other lost family members and some just took in abandoned children who had lost both parents. Because Seita and Setsuko lost both of their parents they went to their aunt’s house so she could care for them. In WWII women and children had to help in the war effort. Children had to do various tasks around their community during this time. They manufactured things for the soldiers such as uniforms, weapons and other various goods. Children also pulled down houses to create firebreaks and rebuilt other houses inside that area. Younger children might have done small errands for the soldiers to get more food for their families. Seita and Setsuko didn’t go out to work and their aunt accused them of not earning their food. Their aunt had the rest of her family to look after as well and because they went out to work she thought it was only fair that they get more food.

"Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted some one on the stand;

And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Casey raised his hand.

Answers

Answer:

he Outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day:

The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play.

And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,

A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest

Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;

They thought, if only Casey could get but a whack at that –

We’d put up even money, now, with Casey at the bat.

But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,

And the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake;

So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,

For there seemed but little chance of Casey’s getting to the bat.

But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,

And Blake, the much despis-ed, tore the cover off the ball;

And when the dust had lifted, and the men saw what had occurred,

There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.

Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell;

It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;

It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,

For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in Casey’s manner as he stepped into his place;

There was pride in Casey’s bearing and a smile on Casey’s face.

And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,

No stranger in the crowd could doubt ’twas Casey at the bat.

Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;

Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.

Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,

Defiance gleamed in Casey’s eye, a sneer curled Casey’s lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,

And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.

Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped-

“That ain’t my style,” said Casey. “Strike one,” the umpire said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,

Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore.

“Kill him! Kill the umpire!” shouted someone on the stand;

And its likely they’d a-killed him had not Casey raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Casey’s visage shone;

He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;

He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew;

But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, “Strike two.”

“Fraud!” cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;

But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.

They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,

And they knew that Casey wouldn’t let that ball go by again.

The sneer is gone from Casey’s lip, his teeth are clenched in hate;

He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate.

And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,

And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey’s blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;

The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,

And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;

But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.

First of all, dogs are affectionate and fun companions. They will cuddle up to their owners to be petted. These loving animals are always ready for a hug or pat on the head. If they get the chance, some will even give their human friends a sloppy, wet kiss! Most dogs are playful, too. They love to chase sticks and fetch balls. According to the Humane Society, thirty nine percent of U.S. households own at least one dog. So it is no secret that dogs provide hours of enthusiastic entertainment and companionship.
Secondly, many dogs are protective of their owners. In addition to cuddling and fetching, dog lovers appreciate the protective nature of many canines. Many dogs bark to alert owners when someone comes to their home. A dog owner often feels safer just knowing he has a loyal dog willing to protect its family or alert them of danger. If barking becomes a problem, most dogs can be trained to limit annoying yapping.
Lastly, one of the best features of dogs is that they are great exercise partners. Dogs love to go on walks. Responsible pet owners understand that dogs need plenty of exercise. Read the passage from "Names/Nombres" by Julia Alvarez.

By the time I was in high school, I was a popular kid, and it showed in my name. Friends called me Jules or Hey Jude, and once a group of troublemaking friends my mother forbade me to hang out with called me Alcatraz. I was Hoo-lee-tah only to Mami and Papi and uncles and aunts who came over to eat sancocho on Sunday afternoons – old world folk whom I would just as soon go back to where they came from and leave me to pursue whatever mischief I wanted to in America. JUDY ALCATRAZ, the name on the "Wanted" poster would read. Who would ever trace her to me?

I NEED THIS FAST!!! Which main idea is conveyed in this passage?

Julia’s nicknames help her fit into her new culture.
Julia is determined to hold on to her Dominican identity.
Julia is happier when she is with her family.
Julia’s Dominican name makes it difficult to fit in.

Answers

Answer:

A

Explanation:

The main idea conveyed in the passage is Julia’s nicknames help her fit into her new culture.  The opening line of the chapter claims that Julia was a popular student in high school and that her name reflected such popularity.  Hence option A is correct.

Her close pals referred to her as Hey Jude or Jules, both of which are American names. The paragraph also indicates that she was given the nickname Alcatraz by a bunch of rowdy friends, which is an Americanized form of her Dominican name, Hoo-lee-tah.

The chapter continues by stating that Julia's family members referred to her as Hoo-lee-tah, although she would just as soon have them return home. This shows that Julia is attempting to adapt to American society while putting space between herself and her Dominican roots.

Read the fable The Fox and the Stork by Aesop to complete the activity.

At one time the Fox and the Stork were on visiting terms and seemed very good friends. So the Fox invited the Stork to dinner, and for a joke put nothing before her but some soup in a very shallow dish. This the Fox could easily lap up, but the Stork could only wet the end of her long bill in it and left the meal as hungry as when she began. "I am sorry," said the Fox, "the soup is not to your liking." "Pray do not apologize," said the Stork. "I hope you will return this visit and come and dine with me soon." So a day was appointed when the Fox should visit the Stork; but when they were seated at table all that was for their dinner was contained in a very long-necked jar with a narrow mouth, in which the Fox could not insert his snout, so all he could manage to do was to lick the outside of the jar.

What is The Fox and the Stork?

The Fox and the Stork is one of Aesop's fables and is first recorded in the collection of Phaedrus. It is numbered 426 in the Perry Index.

A fox invites a stork to eat with him and provides soup in a bowl, which the fox can lap up easily; however, the stork cannot drink it with its beak. The stork then invites the fox to a meal, which is served in a narrow-necked vessel. It is easy for the stork to access but impossible for the fox.

The moral is that the trickster must expect trickery in return and that the golden rule of conduct is for one to do to others what one would wish for oneself.

What is considered good or bad propaganda?

Answers

Answer:

The objectives of the propagandist are sometimes positive. The Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is a form of propaganda. These advertisements make an emotional plea – don’t be careless with fire or cute woodland creatures may be harmed. The campaign was incredibly successful in preventing forest fires, but it may also have contributed to the public’s aversion to controlled burning.

No matter how harmless it appears, propaganda should always be scrutinized, as it promotes decision making and action based on limited, sometimes false, information and emotional appeal. Propaganda targets and manipulates our emotions without the benefit of two-way communication or fact-based debate.
