Answers

Tongue twisters are a type of genre that are characterized by their difficult-to-pronounce phrases, often used as a game or as a tool for speech therapy.

Four features of tongue twisters include alliteration, repetition, word play, and humor. Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of words, as in "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers."

Repetition is the recurrence of the same word or phrase, as in "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" Word play involves using puns or other clever uses of language, such as "She sells seashells by the seashore."

Humor is a common feature of tongue twisters, often making use of puns, word play, or simply the absurdity of the phrases.

Three functions of tongue twisters include improving pronunciation, increasing fluency, and promoting creativity. Improving pronunciation involves practicing difficult sounds and combinations of sounds that are challenging for non-native speakers or those with speech impediments.

Increasing fluency involves repeating the same phrases quickly and accurately, helping to build confidence in speaking. Promoting creativity involves coming up with new and unique tongue twisters, either individually or as a group, which can help develop language skills and spark creativity.

Overall, tongue twisters are a fun and challenging way to improve language skills and enjoy the playful use of language.

What is a Run-on Sentence?

In this pair of instances, Option 2 constitutes a sentence that continues too long without proper breaks or punctuation.

A run-on sentence occurs when two or more independent clauses, which are complete sentences, are combined without the proper use of punctuation or conjunction.

Option 2 incorrectly joins two independent clauses, "I love reading books" and "Due to my busy schedule, it's difficult to make time for it," without proper punctuation or conjunction.

A. See if there's a girl at the front desk who can make a call.
B. Any receptionist would love to see her pay go up.
C. My research focused mainly on heart disease in men.
D. If there's a pilot at your company, he can vouch for me.

The sentence that best avoids bias is C, "My research focused mainly on heart disease in men," since heart disease in men is not associated to gender stereotypes.

What is bias?

Bias is a tendency or inclination to favor one idea, group, person, or point of view over another, often in a way that is unfair or unjustified. Bias can be conscious or unconscious, and it can manifest in a variety of ways, such as in language, behavior, decision-making, and attitudes.

Sentence C is the most neutral and objective of the four options. It does not contain any gender stereotypes, and it does not assume anything about receptionists or pilots. Instead, it simply presents the topic of the research in a factual and non-judgmental way. The other sentences contain more subjective language and assumptions that could potentially be seen as biased or discriminatory. For instance, a receptionist does have to be a woman. Ron knew the only way he could take the company to the next level was not to only find the right people with the specific experience they needed but to find a what to keep them happy and motivated so they would stay. Jackson learned of a behavioral assessment tool called Predictive Index, produced by the Wellesley, Massachusetts-based management consulting company PI World-wide, and brought it into Meadowbrook as a way to help the managers understand what motivated their employees to come to work every day. He needed his team to sell more. The challenge was how to identify what they needed in sales training to help them grow their sales. In sharing his concerns with Jackson, Eastwood learned that the publishers of the Predictive Index also offered a selling training tool that identified the strengths of salespeople and areas for their development as well as offered customer-focused sales (CFS) training. To explore the tool further, he and his senior management team took the assessment themselves. The results accurately identified Eastwoods selling style. His general managers most over 30 years in the industry, scored in the mid to high range. Next Eastwood gave his sales team members the assessment. However, their overall scores were in the mid-to-low range. Eastwood quickly realized that despite the talent of his sales team, 80 percent of them did not know how to sell. The results of the assessment showed that most of them were not asking enough investigative questions when speaking with their clients. This was a huge breakthrough. Eastwoods team members then took the CFS workshop to learn how to think like customers do and investigate and uncover their needs. The results? "My most senior and successful salesperson followed the CFS process and closed a $40,000 deal with a customer that had only purchased from our competitor for the last ten years," says Eastwood. In another instance, Eastwood had a sales person who was underperforming but knew he had the potential to be successful.
