from On the Northland Trail in White Fang by Jack London

Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been stripped by a recent wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean towards each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadness—a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild. But there was life, abroad in the land and defiant. Down the frozen waterway toiled a string of wolfish dogs. Their bristly fur was rimed with frost. Their breath froze in the air as it left their mouths, spouting forth in spumes of vapor that settled upon the hair of their bodies and formed into crystals of frost. Leather harness was on the dogs, and leather traces attached them to a sled which dragged along behind. The sled was without runners. It was made of stout birch-bark, and its full surface rested on the snow. The front end of the sled was turned up, like a scroll, in order to force down and under the bore of soft snow that surged like a wave before it. On the sled, securely lashed, was a long and narrow oblong box. There were other things on the sled—blankets, an axe, and a coffee-pot and frying pan; but prominent, occupying most of the space, was the long and narrow oblong box. In advance of the dogs, on wide snowshoes, toiled a man. At the rear of the sled toiled a second man. On the sled, in the box, lay a third man whose toil was over,—a man whom the Wild had conquered and beaten down until he would never move nor struggle again. It is not the way of the wild to like movement. Life is an offence to it, for life is movement; and the Wild aims always to destroy movement. It freezes the water to prevent it running to the sea; it drives the sap out of the trees till they are frozen to their mighty hearts; and most ferociously and terribly of all does the Wild harry and crush into submission man—man who is the most restless of life, ever in revolt against the dictum that all movement must in the end come to the cessation of movement. But at the front and rear unawed and indomitable, toiled the two men who were not yet dead. Their bodies were covered with fur and soft-tanned leather. Eyelashes and cheeks and lips were so coated with the crystals from their frozen breath that their faces were not discernible. The gave them the seeming of ghostly masques, undertakers in a spectral world at the funeral of some ghost. But under it all they were men, penetrating the land of desolation and mockery and silence, puny adventurers bent on colossal adventure, pitting themselves against the might of a world as remote and alien and pulseless as the abysses of space. They traveled on without speech, saving their breath for the work of their bodies. On every side was the silence, pressing upon them with a tangible presence. It affected their minds as the many atmospheres of deep water affect the body of the diver. It crushed them with the weight of unending vastness and unalterable decree. It crushed them into the remotest recesses of their own minds, pressing out of them, like juices from the grape, all the false ardors and exaltations and undue self-values of the human soul, until they perceived themselves finite and small, specks and motes, moving with weak cunning and little wisdom amidst the play and inter-play of the great blind elements and forces.

Why the Mediterranean Sea is so famous?

For centuries, the Mediterranean Sea has been the focal point of western civilization. It is an area rich in history and has played critical roles in the development of shipping and trade, as a resource for feeding growing populations, and as an aid to the spread and mingling of races and cultures.

Why is the Mediterranean Sea so blue?

However, the water exchange from the two seas to the Mediterranean is extremely slow, greatly limiting the flow of nutrients to the bigger sea. The lack of nutrients leads to the great inhibition of algae growth, making the Mediterranean clear and better able to absorb/scatter sunlight to appear a vibrant blue.

In another physics experiment, carts run along a frictionless, level track. Cart A is 1 kg and Cart B is 2 kg. Initially cart A is moving to the right at 2.0 m/s and cart B is moving to the left at 7.0 m/s. After they collide, Cart B is moving to the left at 3.5 m/s. What is the magnitude of the velocity of Cart A?

Answers

Answer: [tex]v_{f_A}[/tex] = 5 m/s

Explanation: For collisions, use linear momentum, whose formula is: P = m.v and knowing the law of conservation states that momentum of a closed system is constant in time, i.e. initial momentum equals final momentum:

[tex]p_{f} = p_{i}[/tex]

[tex]m_{A}v_{f_A} + m_{B}v_{f_B} = m_{A}v_{i_A} + m_{B}v_{i_B}[/tex]

Suppose the referential for velocity is positive to the right:

[tex]1.v_{f_A} + 2.(-3.5) = 1.(+2) + 2.(-7)[/tex]

[tex]1.v_{f_A} = 7 + 2 - 14[/tex]

[tex]v_{f_A} = - 5[/tex]

The negative sign, in this case, indicates cart A is going to the left.

The magnitude of velocity of cart A is 5 m/s

What Wollstonecraft sees as the rationale guiding the education of women in her society. What harm does she think results from this view of education?

Answers

Answer:

For Wollstonecraft, the justification that guides the education of women in their society is the desire of great educational and political theorists to leave women inferior and intellectually infantilized in relation to men. She believed that the biggest problem with this view was that it undermined the moral foundations of society and did not give equal rights and freedoms to all citizens.

Explanation:

Wollstonecraft grew up in a society where women were unmotivated and often forbidden to receive quality education. The politicians and great intellectuals of the time claimed the most diverse absurdities to justify the reason why women could not receive the same type of education as men. For Wollstonecraft, however, these justifications were used only to make women inferior to men and infantilized, unable to achieve full intellectual knowledge and reasoning and to make them dependent on men in all aspects of their lives.

Wollstonecraft believed that this was highly harmful to society, because in addition to wasting brilliant women who could cause improvements in all scientific, economic and social fields, it hurt the moral principles of society, did not provide equality and freedom to any and all citizens, on the contrary, it allowed a group of society, women, to become captive and totally dependent and inferior.

The Elizabethan theater as we know it develops slowly. In 1562 the play Gorboduc, the first English play to include blank verse, is performed in front of the queen at the Inner Temple in London. This is written by two gentlemen, Thomas Sackville (the future earl of Dorset) and Thomas Norton, and leaves a lasting impression. Its tale of a kingdom torn between two heirs has great significance for the audience of the day. Other plays follow, drawing on classical themes as well as on ancient British and medieval history, written by (among others) John Heywood, John Pickering, and Lewis Wager. A sign of their success is the construction in 1567 of the first purpose-built theater, the Red Lion, built by John Brayne in Whitechapel.

Explanation:

Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World. How do the authors use historical evidence to support their claim in this passage? Knowing that their slaves were likely to die by the time they reached their thirties, Louisiana sugar planters were extremely selective—they bought only healthy-looking young men in their late teens. On average, the men purchased in Louisiana were an inch taller than the people bought in the other slave states. Those teenagers made up seven to eight out of every ten slaves brought to America's sugar Hell. The others were younger teenage girls, around fifteen to sixteen years old. Their job, for the rest of their short lives, was to have children. Elizabeth Ross Hite knew that, for sure, "all de master wanted was fo' dem wimmen to hav children." Enslaved children would be put to work or sold. The overseer S.B. Raby explained, "Rachel had a 'fine boy' last Sunday. Our crop of negroes will I think make up any deficiencies there may be in the cane crop." That is, a master could sell any slaves who managed to live, if he needed more money than he could make from sugar.

1. They argue that youth and gender are advantages when inventing entirely new forms of music.

2. They argue that plantation owners acted against their own economic interests when they selected enslaved young men.

3. They argue that different forms of music, such as jazz and bomba, came out of different types of hardship.

4. They argue that extremely difficult conditions inspired enslaved young men to invent new forms of music.

Answers

Answer:

3. They argue that different forms of music, such as jazz and bomba, came out of different types of hardship.

Explanation:

The book "Sugar Changed the World" by Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos describes how the favorite spice of sugar came to be. Tracing the history of sugar from the colonial times, the book delves into the form of slavery in these plantations and how it affects slaves the same way slavery overtook the cotton plantation.

In the given passage, the authors argue how different forms of music came to be a form of expression through which these slaves found entertainment and a voice. Despite their owners' claim that the slaves were "just cogs in machinery built to produce", the slaves invent ways to express their dissent, their anger, frustrations, and their dreams, homesickness, etc. Thus, music became a form of a voice in their 'restricted' environment.  And the invention of such music, be it "Jazz in Louisiana, the Bomba in Puerto Rico and Maculelê in Brazil", all came out of the hardships that the people faced in their environments.

Thus, the correct answer is option 3.

A Three-Point Turn Chapter 1 "You know, hardly anyone ever needs to do a three-point turn anymore," said Justin, trying to help Becky calm down. "Oh, so it's not a useful skill AND I am probably going to fail the driving test because I can't do it anyway," Becky said, raising her voice for emphasis. "That should make me feel like a million bucks when I flunk." Justin was riding with Becky so she could take her driving test. He had volunteered for the job because he thought she would be less nervous with him than with their mom, but so far, he wasn't sure he was making any difference. "Slow down, your turn is coming up here," he said, looking ahead. "I know, I know," she replied, "I've been here before remember—the last time I flunked." Justin was pretty sure if he had let her miss the turn, things would only have deteriorated further, but he wasn't sure he was fond of being the scapegoat for Becky's anxiety. "Listen, you need to take a few deep breaths," he said, hoping he could help her at least relax a bit. "Being nervous won't help you with the three-point turn or anything else you have to do. Hey, did you just take that turn without your turn signal on?" This was going to be harder than he thought. "Stop yelling at me," Becky replied, clearly frustrated, "I can't concentrate." "Look, you need to stop and get yourself together here," Justin started. "It is not just about passing the driving test. I don't want to get in an accident, so pull into that parking lot." Becky drove into the office building's parking lot where Justin was pointing. Justin knew they were less than a mile from the licensing office, and if she continued in this condition, he'd be having this same discussion three months from now when she tried the test again for the third time. "You need to get a grip," he started after she put the car in park, "because you have studied and practiced driving all year. You know this stuff inside and out, backwards and forwards. What are you so nervous about?" "I don't know, I don't know," Becky wailed, resting her head on the steering wheel. "I just get so tired of failing." Listening quietly as Becky sobbed, Justin realized this was about much more than a driving test. He also knew if he didn't find a way to help Becky things would just get worse. Chapter 2 Justin took a deep breath and collected his thoughts. Becky was an unbelievably consistent straight-A student. It was Justin who got the bad grades in school, and Justin who had to repeat every math class he'd ever taken. It was Justin who wished he could get the grades Becky got. Some things came easier for Justin: He was athletic, handy with tools, and good at making the best of whatever life threw at him. Mom called him her "lemons into lemonade" kid. But for the most part, Becky succeeded easily, whereas Justin had to work and work to just get a passing grade. Rather than having Becky catalogue all the things she supposedly "failed" at, Justin decided to try an alternative approach, one that wouldn't remind him of all the ways he had failed. "Okay, Becky, let's assume for a moment you fail this test again. What is the worst thing that could happen?" he asked. "I would be the oldest kid at school without a license and be humiliated," she replied. Justin thought he heard a bit of panic in her voice but continued with his plan. "Yes, but won't we still have to drive to school together for at least one more year anyway?" he asked. "Yes, but..." she started. "And who will know, if you don't tell anyone except your friends, that you don't have your license? You know Mom can't afford another car just for you, right?" "Yes," she said quietly. "So what difference does it make, really," he said. "Another three months to wait in the grand scheme of your life doesn't seem like all that long, right?" "I suppose not," she said. Justin could tell she was breathing more slowly now. "Besides," he said, "I would miss all the practice driving with you," and for good measure he reached over and pinched her arm. "Ow," she said, hitting back at him, "that hurt." "So let's go do this, okay? "Okay," she said. Becky cranked up the car, backed slowly out of the parking spot and drove up to the parking lot's exit. Justin noticed, as they waited for the traffic to clear, that she had remembered the turn signal. Which is true of both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2? (5 points) 1.)
