The smack from the cane did not harm her though. Willaim was arrested shortly after her death and was originally persecuted for m*rder, but after an autopsy revealing that Hattie's arteries were hardened up and not working properly (which led to the increased risk of a stroke, and due to the mental pressure she was put under by William, it killed her).
