beginnings of slavery. The goal is not to reteach this history, since your class has likely already studied these topics. Rather, the goal of this lesson is to review pieces of this earlier history to deepen students’ understanding of race and to introduce an important concept, universe of obligation. Scholar Helen Fein defines universe of obligation as the circle of individuals and groups toward whom obligations are owed, to whom rules apply, and whose injuries call for amends. In this unit, we extend Fein’s concept and suggest that both nations and individuals can have a universe of obligation. In either case, it consists of those an individual or a society believes are worthy of respect and protection. The story of Anthony Johnson provides students with an opportunity to reflect on how a society’s universe of obligation is defined. Johnson was an African-born resident of Virginia in the seventeenth century who arrived in the New World as an indentured servant. Like many other indentured servants, both white and black, he won his freedom. But unlike many newly freed servants, he became a prominent landowner. during Johnson’s lifetime, Virginia’s attitudes and laws regarding race and slavery changed. Shortly after his death, slavery became a permanent condition reserved for people with dark skin. By studying Johnson’s story, students can trace the change in Virginia’s universe of obligation and see the origins of not only the belief in the existence of different races but also the claim that one race is superior to another. Students will see the seeds of race and racism planted in seventeenth-century Virginia come to fruition in the reading “Are All Men created equal?” (included here as an extension). This reading quotes Alexander Stephens’s “corner-Stone Speech,” delivered on the eve of the civil War, in which the confederate vice president argues that white supremacy is the foundation of Southern society and the new confederate government. Also quoted in this lesson is a Georgia newspaper editor asserting, in 1865, that because the white and black races are “like different coins at mint,” no amount of legislation or education can make them equal. This is a belief and worldview that proved hard to change throughout the Reconstruction era. This lesson, and the history that follows in this unit, underscores the fact that in the United States, race has perhaps been t

aquifers important to humans?
Answer:
Aquifers are bodies of saturated rock and sediment through which water can move, and they provide 99% of our groundwater. Humans rely on aquifers for most of our drinking water. What would be a negative effect of increased connections and trade between different countries?
Answer:
The weakening of the local economy, exploitation of workers and goods, fewer jobs, a bad outcome for the environment
Explanation:
Lack of local production – some of the countries start to import more and more goods, which affects their local production, and therefore, the economy.Fewer jobs for people – when manufacture in one country has lowered, there are fewer and fewer people needed for the labor. Therefore, it can result in unemployment.Exploitation of foreign workforces and goods – If the production occurs in different countries, and products are provided only by trade, it can result in some countries being simply the workforce for the others. As these countries usually tend to be the poorer ones, their work conditions and salaries are not sufficient. They start earning less, as the industry knows they need the job, so there is a wast split between the cost of the product and the earnings of the workers.Goods and products being over-used – The goods are not limitless, and if certain things continue being imported from other countries, they would start dying out. This way is not sustainable for the functioning of the planet. Negative effect on the environment – every traveling and trade has its carbon footprint which affects the environment greatly. The more commerce and connections there are, the vast pollution is.Why would the idea of poor people be scary to many

Explanation:
Compare and contrast Spanish, French, Dutch, and British methods of colonization. How were they alike, and how were they different? Be sure to consider their economic goals, relations with American Indians, and demographic features/patterns of settlement.
Answer:
Most colonies established by royal charter. Earliest settlements were in Virginia
and Massachusetts but soon spread all
along the Atlantic coast, from Maine to
Georgia, and into the continent’s interior
as far as the Mississippi River.
Colonists were recruited from among
middle-class farmers, artisans, and
tradesmen. Indentured servants, specialists in certain areas (i.e., sawmill
workers, lumbermen), and convicted
criminals were also brought over.
Immigrants from other countries were
welcomed.
Distance from England and a frugal
Parliament allowed colonists to set up
local governments and representative
assemblies and to tax themselves, as
long as they did not take up arms
against the Crown.
Largely non-Catholics. Although some
tolerance was practiced in most
colonies, the Puritans in Massachusetts
established an autocratic and restrictive
religious leadership. Pennsylvania mandated complete tolerance.
Diverse economic activities included
farming, fishing, and trading. Exports
included tobacco, rice, timber, and fish.
Tobacco was the main source of revenue in the Virginia and North Carolina
colonies.
Rapid growth due to liberal immigration
policies. By 1627 Virginia had approximately 1,000 settlers. By 1754 total
population in the English colonies had
grown to 1.5 million; this included large
proportions of German and French.
Originally friendly; early colonists relied
on Native Americans for trade and for
help with survival. Eventually greed for
land led to major conflicts with Indians.
French Colonies
First colonies were trading posts in
Newfoundland; others followed in wake
of exploration of the St. Lawrence valley,
parts of Canada, and the Mississippi
River. Settlements include Quebec
(1608) and Montreal (1642). Louisiana
settled in the late 1600s.
Initially fur traders, merchants, and missionaries. In 1665 some 1100 French
soldiers arrived and were given land.
Neither Protestants nor peasant farmers
were allowed to emigrate.
Colonies were fully subject to the French
king. There were no political rights or
representative government, and public
meetings could not be held without permission.
Even though Protestants had played a
role in the founding of New France, from
around 1659 on they were excluded
from the colony. Colonial life was largely
controlled by the French Catholic clergy.
Although the French government encouraged farming efforts, the fur trade
proved to be more lucrative. Plantations
established in the Mississippi valley
largely failed.
Slow growth; by 1672 no more than
5,000 colonists had settled throughout
New France. In Canada the French population totaled just under 40,000 by
1734. In Louisiana, by 1763 there were
approximately 10,000 settlers, including
5,000 slaves and Acadians.
Despite conversion efforts of missionaries, French respect for Native Americans
allowed many to forge alliances, especially in their wars against the British.
Spanish Colonies
Crown-sponsored conquests gained riches for Spain and expanded its empire.
Most of the southern and southwestern
regions claimed, as well as sections of
the California coast. Settlements include
St. Augustine, Florida (1565); Santa Fe,
New Mexico (1610); and numerous
cities in Texas and California.
Conquistadores, soldiers, and missionaries were the primary Spanish colonizers; farmers and traders came later.
Colonies were governed by crownappointed viceroys or governors.
Settlers had to obey the king’s laws and
could make none of their own.
Settlers were restricted to Catholics;
Protestants were persecuted and driven
out.
Largely a trading economy; some farming in the West. Commerce was controlled by the Spanish board of trade,
with regulations enforced by the
Spanish military.
Slow growth due to greater emphasis on
military conquest, poor relations with
Native Americans, and numerous early
failures to establish permanent settlements. Largest Spanish populations
were in Florida, Texas, California, and
Mexico.
Spanish missionaries saw Native
Americans as heathens to be converted
to Christianity; soldiers viewed them as
fit only for killing or subjugation.
