There are so many opportunities to make a difference in another person’s life. As life gets busy, we tend to lose sight of what’s important, like giving back to the community. Here are some ideas to participate in public service. Local soup kitchens and food pantries are always looking for volunteers. There are also many nursing homes that welcome volunteers. Additionally, many nonprofit businesses, like the YMCA, offer opportunities for people to donate their time. I have included many links throughout my blog that guide people to volunteer opportunities in their area. Think about how you would like to give back. Sometimes getting friends involved can make the experience even more meaningful. Get involved today; it’s never too late!

Read the entry from Amena’s blog about the importance of community service.

How effective is Amena in developing her claim?
A: include a fact about how nursing homes are run

B: include an interview with someone who has never volunteered

C: include an image of YMCA building

D:include a quote from someone who has volunteered

Answers

Answer 1
It’s D a quote from someone who has volunteered
Answer 2

Answer:

it is D, because it tells you to add something that would convince readers to volunteer for making a difference in someone life, like a soup kitchen.

Explanation:

Including a fact about how nursing homes are run would probably make it much more boring and the person isn't going to want to do it, Including an interview with someone who has never volunteered makes no sense so how will they know anything about it and convince the reader to volunteer? Including  an image of a YMCA building wouldn't convince the reader to volunteer, cause it tells them nothing, all they will be thinking is, "okay? its a building what about it?" a picture of a building is not that interesting so it wouldn't convince them of anything, much less care about the cause.

so therefore it is D. include a quote from someone who has volunteered

Answers

Answer:

1. b. skimming

2. b. scanning

3. a. skimming

4. b. scan

5. a. skimming

6. c. carefully read

Explanation:

Skimming and scanning are reading techniques we use to quickly find the information we need within a piece of writing. We use skimming for general information. For example, if we need to find out what an entire paragraph is about in a short time, we will use skimming. Scanning is used for specific details. If we needed to find a particular piece of information in the same paragraph, we would scan the paragraph.

However, there are instances when these techniques can't or shouldn't be used. Sometimes, we need to read a text carefully. For example, students should pay attention to all information their tests contain. If they miss some details, they could choose the wrong answers.

Mr. Frank. Now. About the noise. While the men are in the building below, we must have complete quiet. Every sound can be heard down there, not only in the workrooms, but in the offices, too. The men come at about eight-thirty, and leave at about five-thirty. So, to be perfectly safe, from eight in the morning until six in the evening we must move only when it is necessary, and then in stockinged feet. We must not speak above a whisper. We must not run any water. We cannot use the sink, or even, forgive me, the w.c. The pipes go down through the workrooms. It would be heard. No trash . . . (Mr. Frank stops abruptly as he hears the sound of marching feet from the street below. Everyone is motionless, paralyzed with fear. Mr. Frank goes quietly into the room on the right to look down out of the window. Anne runs after him, peering out with him. The tramping feet pass without stopping. The tension is relieved. Mr. Frank, followed by Anne, returns to the main room and resumes his instructions to the group) . . . No trash must ever be thrown out which might reveal that someone is living up here . . . not even a potato paring. We must burn everything in the stove at night. This is the way we must live until it is over, if we are to survive.

What does this dialogue reveal about how Mr. Frank views his role in the attic?

He considers himself to be the only person who is allowed to make rules.
He sees himself as a leader who is responsible for keeping the others safe.
He understands that people look to him for leadership, but it makes him uncomfortable.

Explanation:

Both simile and metaphor are figures of speech used to compare two different, unrelated, things that share some kind of quality. However, there is a difference. The simile uses words like and as, while the metaphor omits them, stating that something is something else. This is why we can say that the metaphor is a stronger type of comparison.

What are the ""agencies"" to which Carson refers (para. 33)? Why are they reduced to ""so- called control agencies""?

Answers

Answer:

1. the state and federal agencies;

2. because they are ignorant of the effects of the chemicals.

Explanation:

1. The context of her statements shows she was referring to the state and federal agencies who were mandated and overzealous about getting rid of insects they deemed harmful. She said,

"The crusade to create a chemically sterile, insect free world seems to have engendered a fanatic  zeal on the part of many specialists and most of  the so-called control agencies," she clarified who she was referring to when she said, "The  most flagrant abuses go unchecked in both state  and federal agencies."

2. By calling them "control agencies" Carson was revealing that they (the state and federal agencies) were as she put it, "wholly ignorant of their  potentials for harm." That is, they were ignorant of the harmful effects that those chemicals which they advocated for had on the environment. All they knew and were concerned about was to control insects.
