Why do many claim the Civil War was a war over states' rights, and not over slavery?

Answers

Answer:

Because many people insisted that "It's about Southern pride and that it was about their heritage, forgetting about slavery altogether

Explanation:

The Civil War, was in fact, over states' rights, rather than slavery. It was essentially the only reason, with only a small sector on both sides (abolitionists and people who heavily depended on slaves) who viewed it as such.

The first part is the wish to be able to see where the rights of the slaves was drawn from that of the federal, and to test the limits. This was found in the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, in quote, "powers not delegated to the United States, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States". In this case, the right for a state to cede, as well as their right over whether or not they have slavery or not, simply is their choice, rather than being bound with the federal government and the United States.

However, the U.S. Federal Government and the North did not believe so, and even raised an army to force the south to rejoin. This was their first objective. In fact, slavery was not essentially a main objective until the Emancipation Proclamation was published, which effectively ended slavery only in the South. Any states that were still part of the union that allowed slaves technically still had state's rights over them.  Simply going over war over slavery as a subject would have been frowned upon in that day and age, and would not have garnered large amounts of support in any way, shape, or form.

Notice how while slavery is the selling point of the war, it is not exactly the main reason. States individually believe whether or not they are able to first benefit from slavery, and secondly to set whether or not it's own citizens can have slaves.

The next part is to suggest that there was actually not going to be a war if the states did not cede. There would not have been a good reason, as slavery has already been prevalent for years, and to suddenly go to war about it would have put the world, who was watching this interaction, firmly on the side of the South, which the North was looking to avoid.

Slavery was a main part of the Civil War following the Emancipation Proclamation, where finally the Northern objective was shown. In the early years, as well as following the E.P., it has always been about whether the state has the right to cede just because they do not agree with federal beliefs.

This dissertation examines popular fictions that employed the history and

iconography of the American Revolution to promote radical reform movements in the

antebellum United States. The project challenges common critical assumptions that

historical fictions—and particularly those drawing upon Revolutionary history—are

inherently nostalgic and capable of conveying only a limited range of political meanings.

Rather than conservative efforts to preserve Revolutionary history, many works of this type

were extensions of their authors’ progressive reform efforts. These historical fictions sought

to recruit readers to the cause of completing the democratizing work of the Revolution in

order to ensure that the people maintained control over their own institutions.

The project considers works by authors who circulated among groups and parties that

contributed to the democratic tumult of the antebellum period, including Catharine Maria

Sedgwick, George Lippard, Herman Melville, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Beecher

Stowe. As members—either centrally or peripherally—of opposition political parties,

unions, and reform groups, these authors spoke on behalf of, or were received as engaging

with, campaigns for labor reform, socialism, and abolitionism. Situating these texts within

contemporary radical reform movements reveals that they explicitly endorsed policies such

Do you think the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a good decision? Would you have done the same thing? Write in 6 sentences about why we should or should not drop the atomic bond.

Answers

Bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was probably the best choice the Americans had to win at world war 2. If Japan didn't unconditionally surrender after the nukes, the United states would have to implement Operation Downfall. Operation Downfall was the proposed Allied plan for the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands near the end of World War II. If the Americans did this, the world would have changed, splitting Japan like how the Allies did with Germany, splitting some with the Republic of China,  Great Britain, The United States and the Soviet Union. If the Americans conducted the invasion, there would be hundreds of thousands of more casualties maybe even crossing one million. I think with this statement alone, Nuking Japan was probably the best option the Allies had.

I personally think the first bomb should’ve been the only option. Japan was at a stale mate and was in the beginning process of surrendering. The second bomb only expedited the process but was unnecessary.
