There are many examples of sound in this poem. One way this is shown is in the end rhyme. End rhymes are words that rhyme at the ends of lines, which makes a rhyme scheme. In this poem, the rhyme scheme is AABBCCDD. Another way that sound is exemplified in this poem is rhythm. Rhythm is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. In almost every line, there is a syllable count of six, except for the very end which has five. In “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, sound is shown by alliteration. Alliteration is the repeating of beginning consonant sounds. One example of this is the line “Her hardest hue to hold”. In this line, the beginning “H” sound is exaggerated by using it in multiple words.
Imagery is another element that makes “Nothing Gold Can Stay” a poem. One way imagery is shown is Eden. Eden is a garden in the bible, and is referenced in the line “So Eden sank to grief”. In this poem, the reader can visualize a beautiful garden, or Eden, slowly turning dark and gloomy as dark clouds fill a once sunny sky. Another way that imagery is shown is in the line “So dawn goes down to day”. In this line, the reader can imagine a beautiful pink and orange sunrise turning into the boring, blue sky that occurs during the day.
Figurative language is also used to make “Nothing Gold Can Stay” a poem. One example of figurative language is “Her early leaf’s a flower”. This line shows personification, which means giving human traits to an animal or object. In this line, personification is used where the author wrote “Her”, referencing to mother nature. Another example of figurative language is the idea of nature being gold. In this poem, gold is symbolized to mean wealth, beauty, and other precious objects in life, which helps support the theme.
Overall, there is evidence supporting that “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is a poem. It shows multiple examples of figurative language, imagery, and sound throughout the poem.
