Antigone in was a main character in Antigone and was an example of loyalty to her brother and she was very strong and brave. Antigone was clearly a strong character, and confident and strong-willed. Even from the beginning of the story, Antigone is outspoken and passionate. She knew her brother was just protesting for being banished, so she knew the right thing to do was to give him a proper burial to honor his life, their culture, and the gods. She looked past Polyneices's flaws and put his soul to rest. She saw the problems arising from power running rampant in her city and ignores the politics surrounding the brotherly battle.

In ancient greece they distinguished its people based on gender, where women stand as weak compared to men. While the society treats men as brave and aggressive, women on the other hand stand in the ‘second class’ category of people. For example, Ismene, Antigone’s sister, agrees with the notion that women are a low-grade people. She said this during her argument with Antigone, when they were discussing the burial of their brother Polynices. She says, “We must remember we are women born, unapt to cope with men; and, being ruled

by mightier than ourselves, we have to hear these things and worse” Her words picture women as less-than-standard people. They are unable to perform some duties due to their belief that they are ordered by men. It also seems like that when cases of disobedience stand, men appear the most affected. Women on the other hand are too obedient to defy authority. 

I think that Sophocles both agreed and disagreed with his cultures view, because he made a woman a hero in his play, but also made sure he followed all the rules of women in his culture.
