Read the excerpt from Jane Eyre and answer the question.
A snug small room; a round table by a cheerful fire; an arm-chair high-backed and old-fashioned, wherein sat
the neatest imaginable little elderly lady, in widow's cap, black silk gown, and snowy muslin apron; exactly
like what I had fancied Mrs. Fairfax, only less stately and milder looking. She was occupied in knitting; a large
cat sat demurely at her feet. ... A more reassuring introduction for a new governess could scarcely be
conceived; there was no grandeur to overwhelm, no stateliness to embarrass; and then, as I entered, the old
lady got up and promptly and kindly came forward to meet me.
"How do you do, my dear? I am afraid you have had a tedious ride; John drives so slowly: you must be cold,
come to the fire."

Skateboarding became popular in the 1950s. It was originally called sidewalk surfing. This is because it is an
offshoot of surfing. Surfing is the ancient sport of riding a wooden board through ocean waves. Surfing is still
popular today. Like surfing, skateboarding has become its own sport. The most skilled skaters are paid by shoe,
clothing, and even soda companies. They are given money to wear certain products.

State of the Union Speech, excerpt

John F. Kennedy

May 25, 1961

X. SPACE

If we are to win the battle that is now going on around the world between freedom and tyranny, the dramatic achievements in space which occurred in recent weeks should have made clear to us all, the impact of this adventure on the minds of men everywhere. Now it is time to take longer strides—time for this nation to take a clearly leading role in space achievement.

Recognizing the head start obtained by the Soviets with their large rocket engines, we nevertheless are required to make new efforts on our own. For while we cannot guarantee that we shall one day be first, we can guarantee that any failure to make this effort will make us last. We take an additional risk by making it in full view of the world, but as shown by the feat of astronaut Shepard, this very risk enhances our stature when we are successful. Space is open to us now; and our eagerness to share its meaning is not governed by the efforts of others. We go into space because whatever mankind must undertake, free men must fully share.

I therefore ask the Congress, above and beyond the increases I have earlier requested for space activities, to provide the funds which are needed to meet the following national goals:

First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish. We propose to accelerate the development of the appropriate lunar space craft. We propose additional funds for other engine development and for unmanned explorations.

Secondly, an additional 23 million dollars, together with 7 million dollars already available, will accelerate development of the Rover nuclear rocket. This gives promise of some day providing a means for even more exciting and ambitious exploration of space, perhaps beyond the moon, perhaps to the very end of the solar system itself.

Third, an additional 50 million dollars will make the most of our present leadership, by accelerating the use of space satellites for world-wide communications.

Fourth, an additional 75 million dollars—of which 53 million dollars is for the Weather Bureau—will help give us at the earliest possible time a satellite system for world-wide weather observation.

Let it be clear that I am asking the Congress and the country to accept a firm commitment to a new course of action, a course which will last for many years and carry very heavy costs: 531 million dollars in fiscal 1962—an estimated seven to nine billion dollars additional over the next five years. If we are to go only half way, or reduce our sights in the face of difficulty, in my judgment it would be better not to go at all.

Read the following line from the text:

No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.

Doubting Rhea
by Samantha Dias

Rachel and Rhea had been best friends since kindergarten and thought they would be best friends forever. But once they began middle school, Rachel began to feel that Rhea was growing distant from her. They didn’t spend as much time together as they did in elementary school. They were in different clubs and had different classes. Over the past few weeks, Rhea had been avoiding Rachel, or so Rachel thought. This coming weekend would mark a month since they had last spoken. Rachel worried that Rhea had tired of her. The thought made Rachel want to run up to Rhea and demand an explanation, but instead she burst into silent sobs.

Saturday was Rachel’s birthday. She had planned a little party just for her and Rhea. But when the time came, Rhea didn’t show up. Rachel was sure her friend couldn’t have forgotten her birthday, and she waited all evening for her call. Rachel was about to give up, when she heard the doorbell. There stood Rhea at the front door shouting, “Hey, Birthday girl!!”

Rachel frowned, “So you finally remembered.”

“What do you mean?” Rhea asked. “Of course I remembered. It’s the reason I haven’t been able to meet you these past weeks.”

Rachel replied warily, “You really think I’m going believe that?”

Rhea smiled. “When you see your gift, you’ll have no choice but to believe me.”

Rhea led Rachel to a nearby playground, where a stage had been set up. Rhea beamed at Rachel as the members of Incandescent Chihuahua, Rachel’s favorite band, walked onto the stage.

Rachel hugged her friend. “I don’t believe my eyes! How did you do this?”

Rhea smiled, “I wanted your 15th birthday to be special. You missed their concert last year. Their agent owed my dad a favor, but my dad said I had to earn it. So I’ve been working as his assistant for the last month, which is the reason I’ve been so busy. I couldn’t say anything because it’s so hard for me to keep a secret from you.”

Rachel couldn’t believe how petty she had been and promised herself that she would never jump to conclusions again.

My mother came home at about 10:00 pm that night. Tired, sore, and hopeless that she would never be able to get another job. I saw a new bruise on her left eye when she came home. "great" I thought. "she had another bad day".

"Hey mom...what happened to your eye"? Ahh kid don't worry about that. Just a little disagreement". *sigh* i knew who did this. My mothers pimp..he's a total *******. "Mom was it DshiNNE again"? "Kid! i said don't worry about it, it just work"! She stomped upstairs again like she does every night after work.

after her shift she smokes her crack. Always.

I was still sitting in my living room or, what was supposed to be a living room. This room was just a couch and an old TV. I sat there, thinking about whatever the hell. Then I hear a loud bang. "what the...what was that"? "mom?! whats going on up there"?  *silence* I went upstairs to see what the loud bang was. My mother was not in here room like she normally was. I got this, sick feeling that something was super wrong. I went over to the bathroom. I Opened the door...

I looked deep into his eyes and saw nothing. A deep empty void of nothing. Did I even recognize him anymore? My brother. My sweet, caring, little brother. who had never harmed anyone in his life. People were cruel, the world was cruel. He stood on the ledge of the rooftop, his eyes suddenly flooded with tears of desperation and sadness, years of pain and suffering.  How had I not noticed? All this time I had lived oblivious, when all it took was this one moment  to open my eyes and I see the rawness of his pain. He whispered softly " thank you for being the only person who loves me ."

A) To make each stanza in the poem slightly longer.

I don't completely understand the point of this, but it has something to do with the way the poem sounds and is read. The rhyme scheme of a poem can impact the audience's feelings towards that poem, and that's what I assume the poet was going for.
