Radio created a music industry, and by the 1920s people began enjoying music at home.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Radio created a music industry, and by the 1920s people began enjoying music at home.

Explanation:

The excerpt seems to be focusing on this statement through, "People listened to music in their homes. They bought record players. They listened to music on the radio, too." Secoundly, the title of "Music Gets Personal" provides the idea that the rest of the excerpt may be about people being able to become closer to music.

Here we go again, I thought. Another time-wasting experience. But Sukeforth looked like a sincere person, and I thought I might as well listen. I agreed to meet him that night. When we met, Sukeforth got right to the point. Mr. Rickey wanted to talk to me about the possibility of becoming a Brown Dodger. If I could get a few days off and go to Brooklyn, my fare and expenses would be paid. At first I said that I couldn't leave my team and go to Brooklyn just like that. Sukeforth wouldn't take no for an answer. He pointed out that I couldn't play for a few days anyhow because of my bum arm. Why should my team object?

I continued to hold out and demanded to know what would happen if the Monarchs fired me. The Dodger scout replied quietly that he didn't believe that would happen.

I shrugged and said I'd make the trip. I figured I had nothing to lose.

2. The "dynamic character" in "The Winter Hibiscus" is Saeng. She experiences the transformation from a sense of despair and later a sense of intimate connection and contentment when she sees the Winter Hibiscus. This sight means that she has not lost anything in her new environment. She only needs to embrace the rest of the culture, aware that the world is the same everywhere.

3. The theme or the central message of "The Winter Hibiscus" centers on the need to renew hope and determination by embracing challenges without expressing a feeling of loss. That Saeng did not pass the first driving test does not mean she cannot attempt the test again and again. She must remain focused to achieve results.

5. The most dominant generational conflict in "The Winter Hibiscus" is cultural expectations and identity in the United States. Saeng must learn to speak English, the American way. Her behavior must align with her new environment. She cannot force her old cultures on the larger culture. She can only marry some of her old cultures with the new while jettisoning many others that do not fit the cultural milieu of the United States.

Thus, "The Winter Hibiscus" teaches that survival in a new environment does not depend on the cultural setting but the individuals involved. They must resolve to live.

Answers

The two statements from the text that support Mrs. March's claim in paragraph 17 that Amy is conceited are:

"Annoyed by what she could only see as rudeness, Amy quickly retorted, letting Jo know that she only wished she could be  as fortunate as Laurie to be afforded a fraction of the money he must have spent on his horse." (paragraph 5) "With an audience now interested in her stroke of misfortune, Amy, with a level of drama only she could muster, proceeded  to lament her debt, a debt she had incurred trying to keep up with the latest fashions." (paragraph 6)

A conceited person is someone that is proud and materialistic. These two excerpts from the text reveal that Amy is a materialistic and proud person.

In paragraph 5, she retorted sharply and saw another's stance as rudeness. She also wished to have a fraction of the money that Laurie had spent on the horse.

In paragraph 6, Amy incurred debt to keep up with the latest fashions. All of these show that Amy is conceited.

Nicholas’s Diary: April 2 and 3

Friday, April 2

Well, it’s only 10 more hours until my father and I leave for our treasure hunt. Every Saturday morning for as long as I can remember I have seen him leave, always by himself, to look for treasure. I have always longed to go with him, and he’s always told me that someday I would get the chance. I was so excited when he told me I would finally have my chance that I was bouncing off the walls like a rubber ball and springing from one place to the next the rest of the day.

He has always been as quiet as a mouse about the treasure that he finds, scurrying away with his equipment in the morning and piling up his treasure in his study. Even though he says he always comes home with something, he has never shown it to me or even told me what type of treasure it is. Is it gold, or silver, or maybe it’s precious jewels? Whatever it is, tomorrow I will find out, and hopefully he’ll let me bring some to class so that I can show my friends since I’ve been bragging about it to them ever since Dad told me I could go!

Saturday, April 3

The treasure hunt was fun, but it was not what I expected. Dad and I left early in the morning and headed for the same woods that we sometimes go hiking in on Sundays. I never would have thought they hold treasure, but what was really odd was when Dad told me to leave the shovels at home because we wouldn’t need them. But what he did bring with him was a bright yellow GPS . I had seen it in his truck many times before. I always wondered what he did with it. Today I found out.

Dad and I wandered into the woods, first staying on the hiking path I had taken several times before and then veering off the path. The forest was like a statue; it was still and covered in damp moss and dead leaves; it didn't even seem alive. It appeared that no one had been there for a long time so I knew that this treasure must be old and far under the ground. How were we going to get to it without shovels?

As Dad kept his eyes on the GPS , I looked around, and suddenly I noticed a patch of leaves that was disturbed and a log that looked like it had been moved. When I asked Dad about it, his eyes lit up, and he said he saw the treasure. He reached under the log and pulled out a plastic box with a label that read “Official Geocache.”

I didn’t know what an official geocache was, but I soon found out when Dad opened it. Inside was a little notebook and a bunch of small items like a set of dice, a toy car, and a large silver dollar. Dad said that he thought the toy car was cool, so he took it out and put it in his pocket and then pulled a golf ball from his other pocket and put it in the box. He wrote his name and my name in the little notebook and then closed the box and put it back where he found it.

Geocaching, which is what Dad later told me this type of treasure hunting is called, was much different than digging for gold in the ground. But I thought it was fun, and I hope Dad takes me again next Saturday.
Question 1
Part A

In "Nicholas's Diary: April 2 and 3," what is Nicholas’s first thought when he and his father leave home to go treasure hunting?

It is not going to be the type of treasure hunt that he thought it would be.

The treasure will be carefully hidden and closely guarded.

He will not have a very good story to tell his friends at practice on Monday.

He will not be finding gold or silver, but something far more important.
Question 2
Part B

Which sentence from the text best supports the answer in Part A?

"The forest was like a statue; it was still and covered in damp moss and dead leaves; it didn't even seem alive."

“As Dad kept his eyes on the GPS , I looked around, and suddenly I noticed a patch of leaves that was disturbed and a log that looked like it had been moved.”

“…what was really odd was when Dad told me to leave the shovels at home because he said we wouldn’t need them.”

“Dad and I left early in the morning and headed for the same woods that we sometimes go hiking in on Sundays.”

Explanation:

Answer:

In the poem "Ozymandias," Percy Shelley paints a picture of the desolation and ruin of a once-powerful empire. Shelley uses a narrative shift to make the point that power and might are not immortal. He doesn't give us fantastical descriptions of what the kingdom was once like. The traveler in the poem gives us the bare facts of what it is now:

Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

This description makes the final lines of the poem, spoken by the long-dead Ozymandias, more effective because of the irony:

"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

All that remains are remnants of his "mighty works"—a broken statue, the traveler says:

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

Shelley's image of the abandoned and ruined statue suggests that while empires come and go, only art lasts forever.

Mr. Cubara is looking forward to ------- the environmental company

Answers

Taking the context presented in the sentence into consideration, we can fill in the blank in the following manner:

Mr. Cubara is looking forward to joining the environmental company.

When do we use "look forward to"?We use the phrasal verb "look forward to" when we want to say we are excitedly waiting for something that will happen in the future. For instance, if you are excited about your trip to Barbados, you can say, "I'm looking forward to traveling to Barbados."

How can we fill in the blank?Since there are no options in the question, we must find verbs that complete the meaning of "look forward to" in a way that makes sense. In this case, "join" seems to be the best option. Mr. Cubara is excited about working with the environmental company. We must keep in mind that, after "look forward to," we must use a verb with -ing.
