Read the following excerpt from Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" and answer the question that follows:
"But Britain is the parent country, say some. Then the more shame upon her conduct. Even brutes do not devour their
young, nor savages make war upon their families. Wherefore, the assertion, if true, turns to her reproach; but it happens
not to be true, or only partly so, and the phrase PARENT OR MOTHER COUNTRY hath been jesuitically adopted by the
King and his parasites, with a low papistical design of gaining an unfair bias on the credulous weakness of our minds.
Europe, and not England, is the parent country of America. This new World hath been the asylum for the persecuted
lovers of civil and religious liberty from EVERY PART of Europe."
Who is this paragraph created for?
A. People who want to leave America and return to Britain
B. People who think America should separate from Britain
C. The British
OPeople who think America should still be loyal to Britain

Answers

Answer 1
B. People who think America should separate from Britain.

The excerpt from Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" is an argument in favor of American independence from Britain. Paine challenges the idea that Britain is a "parent country" to America and argues that America is actually an asylum for people seeking freedom from persecution in Europe. The paragraph is intended for people who are considering the idea of American independence and who may be persuaded by Paine's argument.
Answer 2
Final answer:

Thomas Paine's 'Common Sense' targets those who believe America should remain loyal to Britain, challenging the idea of Britain as a 'parent' country and instead proposing Europe as a true 'parent' to America.

Explanation:

The paragraph excerpted from Thomas Paine's 'Common Sense' is created predominantly for people who think America should still be loyal to Britain. Paine aggressively challenges the notion that Britain is the 'parent' or 'mother' country to America, suggesting that this concept has been manipulated by the monarchy and its supporters to unfairly influence people's opinion. Instead, Paine directs the focus towards Europe as the 'parent country' of America, highlighting it as a haven for those persecuted for their civil and religious freedoms. His tone is suggestive of a critique against those who remain loyal to Britain, as he positions European connection as a source of pride and identity.

This evidence would provide a deeper analysis of studies that have already been conducted which have found no correlation between voter ID laws and voter turnout. By explaining a commonly omitted factor, this evidence would give readers a better understanding of why previous studies may not have found a correlation and demonstrate that there is a relationship between voter ID laws and decreased voter turnout.

Title: A Tale of Contrasting Speeches: Brutus and Mark Antony in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

Introduction:

In Shakespeare's tragedy "Julius Caesar," the pivotal moment of Caesar's assassination leads to two speeches by Brutus and Mark Antony that are distinctly different. These speeches not only reveal the clear disparities in the characters' rhetorical techniques but also play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the play. By analyzing their speeches, this essay will compare and contrast the oratory styles used by Brutus and Mark Antony, and explore how their words shape the conclusion of the play.

Body:

Contrast in Rhetorical Styles:

a. Brutus' Speech:

Brutus delivers a logical and persuasive speech aimed at justifying the conspirators' actions and addressing the concerns of the crowd. He appeals to the audience's rationality by explaining how Caesar's ambition posed a threat to the integrity of the Roman Republic. In his speech, Brutus states, "It was not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more" (Act 3, Scene 2). This quote exemplifies his use of logical reasoning to convince the audience of his honorable intentions.

b. Mark Antony's Speech:

In contrast, Mark Antony employs a more emotional and manipulative style of rhetoric. He takes advantage of his rapport with the crowd and cunningly uses irony to question Brutus' claims. Antony repeatedly emphasizes the phrase, "But Brutus is an honorable man" (Act 3, Scene 2), gradually turning it into a sarcastic taunt that undermines Brutus' credibility. Antony skillfully appeals to the audience's emotions, exploiting their grief and anger over Caesar's death, ultimately inciting them against the conspirators.

Effect on the Crowd:

a. Brutus' Speech:

Initially, Brutus' speech successfully convinces the crowd to sympathize with him and the conspirators. The Roman citizens, driven by their respect for Brutus, begin to understand the reasoning behind Caesar's assassination. They even proclaim, "Live, Brutus! Live, live!" (Act 3, Scene 2), demonstrating their initial support for his actions. However, as the speech progresses, the crowd's sentiments gradually shift.

b. Mark Antony's Speech:

Mark Antony's speech, delivered with calculated passion, manages to stir the emotions of the crowd and turn them against the conspirators. Through skillful rhetoric and persuasive devices, Antony fuels the public's anger and grief, prompting them to seek vengeance for Caesar's murder. The crowd's change in sentiment is evident when they cry out, "We'll mutiny!" (Act 3, Scene 2), expressing their newfound loyalty to Antony and their willingness to rebel.

Influence on the Play's Resolution:

a. The Escalation of Conflict:

The stark contrast between Brutus and Mark Antony's speeches escalates the conflict between the conspirators and Caesar's loyalists. Antony's adept manipulation of the crowd successfully turns them against the conspirators, leading to riots and chaos in the streets of Rome. This heightening of tension ultimately results in the downfall of the conspirators and the continuation of Caesar's legacy through Antony and Octavius.

b. Repercussions for the Characters:

Brutus' rational and principled speech ultimately fails to maintain the crowd's loyalty, resulting in his tragic demise. Antony's persuasive power ensures his own survival and opens the path for him to assume a position of power and authority in Rome. The contrasting fates of Brutus and Antony highlight the potency of effective oratory and the consequences it can have on individuals and the course of history.

Conclusion:

Brutus and Mark Antony's speeches in "Julius Caesar" serve as crucial turning points in the play, shaping its resolution and influencing the fates of the characters. Through their differing rhetorical styles, Brutus appeals to reason while Antony manipulates emotions. These speeches illustrate the power of persuasive language and its capacity to sway public opinion. Ultimately, Antony's manipulation of the crowd leads to chaos and the downfall of the conspirators, while Brutus' inability to maintain support results in his tragic demise. Shakespeare's portrayal of these speeches emphasizes the significance of rhetoric in politics and the profound impact it can have on the unfolding of events.

(3.1.4:) Without information about Project 1, it is not possible to examine its external benefits.

3.1.1: The two projects needed by the South African citizens would depend on the specific needs and priorities of the country and its people. Without more information provided, it is difficult to identify the exact projects required.

However, some potential projects that could benefit South African citizens might include infrastructure development projects such as building new roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, or improving access to clean water and electricity.

Other possibilities could include initiatives to address social issues like poverty alleviation, healthcare programs, or environmental conservation projects.

3.1.2: Two private costs that may be incurred in project 2 could include direct financial expenditures by private entities involved in the project, such as costs associated with construction materials, labor, equipment, and project management.

Another private cost could be the opportunity cost for private individuals or businesses, meaning the benefits or profits they could have gained from alternative investments or projects if they had not participated in project 2.

3.1.3: The government should apply cost-benefit analysis for big projects for several reasons. Firstly, cost-benefit analysis helps in assessing the economic viability and feasibility of projects by comparing the costs involved with the potential benefits they would generate.

This analysis ensures that taxpayer money is spent effectively and efficiently, maximizing the return on investment. Additionally, it helps in prioritizing projects based on their overall impact and benefit to society, enabling the government to allocate resources wisely.

Cost-benefit analysis also promotes transparency and accountability in decision-making, as it provides a systematic and evidence-based approach to evaluating projects and justifying their selection.

3.1.4: The external benefits of Project 1 illustrated above would need to be further specified to provide an accurate examination. External benefits refer to positive impacts or advantages that are experienced by individuals or entities not directly involved in the project.

These benefits could include improved accessibility and connectivity for communities, enhanced public services, increased job opportunities, economic growth, reduced traffic congestion, or environmental sustainability. The specific external benefits of Project 1 would depend on its nature, scope, and objectives.

A comprehensive assessment would involve analyzing the potential positive effects on various stakeholders and the wider community impacted by the project.

I just couldn't stand being inside so I went to go on a walk instead. The worst was yet to come. I slipped on ice and I was all wet and in pain. I then said "You know what, I'm going back home because this is ridiculous." So the next morning, I went back to the airport and came back home where I actually feel more comfortable. Never will I pack a random trip by myself again.

Hope this story works for you!

Explanation:

It was a sunny day in the middle of summer, and I was feeling adventurous. I had always wanted to try skydiving, and today was the day. I arrived at the airfield, and the instructors gave me a quick lesson on what to do and what not to do. They strapped me into my parachute, and we got into the plane.

As we ascended higher and higher into the sky, I started to feel more and more nervous. But I was determined to go through with it. When we reached the right altitude, I looked down and saw the world below me. It was incredible.

The instructor gave me the signal, and we jumped out of the plane. The first few seconds were exhilarating, and I felt like I was flying. But then, I realized that I was falling very fast. The wind was rushing past me, and I couldn't catch my breath. I was terrified.

I tried to remember what the instructors had told me, but my mind was blank. I pulled on the cords of my parachute, but nothing happened. I was still falling. I started to panic.

Just when I thought it was all over, the parachute finally opened. I was jolted upwards, and I felt like I was going to be sick. The rest of the descent was slow and peaceful, but I was too shaken up to enjoy it.

When I landed back on solid ground, I collapsed in a heap. My legs were shaking, and I felt like I had just been through a war. Never will I do that again.

Read "Commonplaces" by Rudyard Kipling. Then, answer the question that follows.
Rain on the face of the sea,
Rain on the sodden land,
And the window-pane is blurred with rain
As I watch it, pen in hand.
Mist on the face of the sea,
Mist on the sodden land,
Filling the vales as daylight fails,
And blotting the desolate sand.
Voices from out of the mist,
Calling to one another:
"Hath love an end, thou more than friend,
Thou dearer than ever brother?"
Voices from out of the mist,
Calling and passing away;
But I cannot speak, for my voice is weak,
And this is the end of my lay.

The resources of the visualarts are taxed beyond their powers in attempting to portray its phenomenal beauty. Language and illustration combined must fail. The elements thatunite to make the Grand Canyon the most sublime spectacle in nature are many and exceedingly diverse. The giant forms, which result from thesculpture of tempests through ages too long for man to compute, are wrought into endless details. To describe these forms would be a task equal inmagnitude to that of describing the stars in the sky or the abundant beauties of the forest with its traceries of foliage presented by oak and pine andpoplar, by beech and linden and hawthorn, by tulip and lily and rose, by fern and moss and lichen.
