1- In the opening of The Sword of Summer, Magnus states, "Yeah, I know. You guys are going to

read about how I died in agony, and you're going be like, "Wow! That sounds cool, Magnus! Can

I die in agony too?" How does learning that Magnus dies set the tone for the novel? In what

ways is learning this fact about his fate unique?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Learning that Magnus dies is a very important and unique plot device that Riordan uses. The lighthearted style of writing makes the tone feel humorous, but the idea of an agonizing death builds suspense. By learning that he dies, the reader questions how and why Magnus dies. The reader also wonders how he is writing to the reader if he really is dead. Not many writers write from the perspective of a dead character. Since death is the end of life, it is normally the end of a story. No so in "The Sword of Summer." In fact, Magnus' death sets the story up, explaining how he was accepted into Valhalla and so forth.

Answer 2

The tone of the novel is established for the crisis and excitement to come when readers learn that Magnus continues to suffer until his death.

Because they know that the protagonist's fate has already been decided, readers experience a sense of urgency and anticipation. This information changes the plot in radical ways by raising questions about how and why Magnus dies. This builds tension as the readers are curious to know what happened before his demise and how he got there. The development of Magnus' character and the decisions he makes throughout the story are further complicated and tense by the fact that we know his fate from the very beginning.

She wishes to calm Mary and cover up her own lack of composure. Mary frets that Mr Elliot will disappear from view. Mary is creating a fuss in front of the others in the room

Answers

Answer:

C: She wishes to calm Mary and cover up her own lack of composure.

Explanation:

Jane Austen's "Persuasion" revolves around the life of a young woman named Anne Elliot and her struggles with family, love, and friendship. The novel deals with the common themes of social status, class rigidity, marriage, and one's profession as deemed 'fit' in a society.

In the given passage from the text, Mary revealed she saw Mr. Elliot and Mrs. Clay together which Anne denied for Mr. Elliot "was to leave Bath at nine this morning, and does not come back till to-morrow." But when Mary insisted it was them, Anne had no choice but to go and see for herself. She did it mainly to calm Mary and also to hide her embarrassment in not knowing what is really going on or who Mr. Elliot really is.

Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World.

A fire was lit in a giant iron cauldron, and the certificates of 2,300 Indians were tossed into the flames—the first major act of Satyagraha. "I am not property," the Indians were showing. "I am not your victim," they were demonstrating. "I have the power of my conscience," they were proving. The quiet strength of the Indian community shook the South African government. And by June 1914 it gave in; the Black Act was taken off the books. The Indians had insisted that they were not mere workers but were citizens—and finally the government could not resist.

What evidence do the authors include to support the central idea of this passage?

The burning of certificates and the repeal of the Black Act show that the Indians reclaimed their power.
The Black Act shows that the South African government saw the Indians as property.
The burning of certificates and the act of Satyagraha show how the Indians had to comply with the Black Act.
The presence of 2,300 Indians shows that the community in South Africa was large enough to revolt.

Answers

Answer:

The burning of certificates and the repeal of the Black Act show that the Indians reclaimed their power.

Explanation:

The given passage concerns about the Black Act that was passed in South Africa specifically for Asians (Indian and Chinese to be precise). The Black Act required all male members of the society to produce for themselves and his family a certificate of identity. This act was revolted by Gandhi through Satyagraha.

The central idea of the passage is how Indians act of resistance helped them  to reclaim their power. And to support this central idea the author included the burning of certificates (of identity) and resistance by Indians as an evidence to show that Indians reclaimed their power.

Thus the correct answer is the first option.

The evidence the authors include to support the central idea of the passage is:

A. The burning of certificates and the repeal of the Black Act show that the Indians reclaimed their power.

The passage belonging to "Sugar Changed the World," by Marina Budhos and Marc Aronson, has as its central idea the reclaim of power by the Indian community in South Africa. The Black Act was an obligatory registration for Chinese and Indian people to remain in South Africa. Everyone, from the age 8 and upward, was supposed to be registered, otherwise they would have to leave. The authors provide two details to support the central idea:

1. the burning of the certificates by the Indian community and

2. the repeal (cancellation) of the Black Act.

In conclusion, with those details, the authors support the idea that the Indian community was able to reclaim their power.

while writing a persuasive piece which appeal should you use to evoke emotion in your audience

Answers

Answer:

You should use Pathos to evoke emotion in your audience.

Explanation:

There are three well-known forms of persuasion first introduced by Aristotle: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos.

Ethos happens when the speaker appeals to ethics. For that reason, how effective this device will be depends on how credible the speaker is. If the speaker is a role model or, for instance, an expert on the matter, listeners are more likely to trust his argument.

Logos appeals to logic and its efficacy relies on structure and evidence. Thus, the speaker must walk the audience through the logical path to the conclusion they must reach.

Finally, Pathos is an emotional argument, an appeal to the audience's emotions. It targets shared feelings and cultural values with the goal of having the listener relate to what is being said.  Empathy, pity, comprehension, even anger can all be triggered by an effective argument relying on Pathos.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! Melvin couldn't believe his luck. He had always wanted to get gold and purple Dynamite mountain bike. He was working hard at his chores and saving his allowance. Finally, he had enough money to buy the bike of his dreams. His father said they would go to the store on Saturday. Friday night, Melvin could hardly sleep. His mind was unable to rest as it raced with excitement and anticipation. After a few hours of counting sheep after sheep, he finally drifted off into a deep sleep where his dreams were vivid and realistic. He could feel the wind in his hair as he raced up and down the hills on his new mountain bike. In the morning, Melvin's father woke him up at 7 am sharp. After getting dressed and brushing their teeth, they got in the car and headed to the store. Melvin felt like he could burst with excitement! When his father asked if he was ready, Melvin quickly replied, "Are you kidding? I have been ready for months!" When they arrived at the store, Melvin sprinted to the back where the bikes were. His eyes glistened when he saw all the new, shiny bikes. His choices were endless! But there was only one that he really wanted. Melvin's eyes scanned back and forth for the gold and purple bike that he had been dreaming about, but he couldn't see it. He searched and searched up and down the aisles, but it was nowhere to be found. His heart sank with disappointment. It was the only one he really wanted, and now he couldn't get it. "I worked so hard for nothing! It's just not fair!" Melvin exclaimed as his shoulders slumped and he stormed away from the bikes. He just wanted to give up and go home, but Melvin's father told him not to worry. Like any dad would, he went and spoke to the store clerk. A few minutes went by as Melvin paced back and forth, anxiously awaiting his father's return. Sure enough, his dad came back with a huge smile on his face. He told Melvin that there was one gold and purple Dynamite mountain bike at the store across town and that they would put it on hold for him. Melvin jumped up and down with delight. He was so happy, and he finally understood what his father had always told him: You should never give up at the first hurdle! Which detail suggests the problem Melvin faces in the story? A. It's a 46,000 square mile nation hanging off the east coast of China. It is one of the poorest nations in the world and it is armed with nuclear weapons. It is North Korea. Immediately to the south lies a nation with one of the world's richest economies. About one-third of all phones and TVs are made here. The people of this nation are among the world's most educated. Unemployment is low, job security is high, and workers in this nation enjoy the highest salaries in Asia. It is South Korea. The people of this nation share origins with their northern neighbor, but they have since grown far apart. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (known to Westerners as North Korea) was founded in 1945 after World War II. Their neighbor at the end of the Korean Peninsula, South Korea or the Republic of Korea, was established at the same time. These two nations have an unusual history. For one thing, they have technically been at war since 1950. Though they were born at the same time, these two countries had different parents. The United States supported South Korea in its infancy. China and the Soviet Union supported North Korea. The U.S. and the Soviet Union may have ended World War II as allies, but they had different ways of organizing their societies. The U.S. is a capitalist country. That means that some people are rich and some people are poor. Resources are distributed unevenly. Business are owned by private entities. The Soviet Union claimed to have a communist system. That means that everybody supposedly gets the same. Resources are distributed more evenly. Business are owned in "common" by the government. These two superpower nations raised North and South Korea in their own images. The two Koreas went to war in 1950. The North attacked and took over much of South Korea. But the United States jumped in and pushed the North Koreans back to the Chinese border. Then China got involved and pushed the Americans and South Koreans back. The nations agreed to a ceasefire. Millions of people were dead and the living returned to their original boundaries. The war never officially ended, though combat has ceased for the most part. After the war, South Korea was one of the poorest nations in the world. In 1960 the average citizen made $79 a year. The country did not have a lot of natural resources to sell, but they did have many hardworking people. During the 1960s, the country began manufacturing labor-intensive products. Selling these products to people in other nations made South Korea rich. They now have one of the largest and most thriving economies in the world. As of 2012, the average South Korean citizen makes around $32,020 a year. The economy of North Korea is dramatically different. Since it's birth in the 1940s, North Korea has been one of the most secluded countries in the world. They promote an idea of self-reliance that they call Juche. Under this idea, they do little to no trading with other nations. Up until the 1980s, they received large cash infusions from China and the Soviet Union. But the Soviet Union fell apart in the 80s and became separate capitalist countries, of which Russia is largest. Without the Soviet contributions, North Korea entered a long period of famine that lasted through the 90s. Food was hard to come by and some estimate that millions of people starved to death. Still, the country persisted when much of the world thought that it would fall apart. Not only did they survive, they managed to build a nuclear arsenal during this time. North Korea and South Korea share a border. Since they are locked in state of perpetual war, it's not a regular boarder with a simple checkpoint. The border they share is known as a "demilitarized zone." A demilitarized zone is supposed to be free from military installations. Yet, the Korean Demilitarized Zone is the most heavily militarized border in the world. Both nations have their biggest guns lined-up on the divide and pointed at the other side. It is literally the opposite of what the phrase "demilitarized zone" implies. Some day Korea may be unified again. It seems unlikely now, but stranger things have happened. Yet, even if they did unify, how could these very different societies acclimate to one another? They have grown in different directions. One country is among the wealthiest, the other amongst the poorest. The average North Korean male is estimated to be five-inches shorter than a South Korean (some suspect because of malnutrition). With such big differences, will they ever be able to see eye to eye?::::read the passage and answer the question::;; "In what ways have the two Koreas grown apart?
