What is soccer?
A form of football played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball which may not be handled during play except by the goalkeepers.

But how did it all begin? Soccer was invented in London, England, in 1863 when the first governing body, the Football Association, was formed. This created a standardized, universally accepted set of rules for all teams to follow.
Records trace the history of soccer back more than 2,000 years ago to ancient China. Greece, Rome, and parts of Central America also claim to have started the sport; but it was England that transitioned soccer, or what the British and many other people around the world call “football,” into the game we know today.
Greece. Greece's claim to the origins of soccer revolves around the game Episkyros. Episkyros involved two teams handling or kicking a ball. The aim was to get the ball past a white line on the opposition's side of the field of play.
The word “soccer,” which is believed to have originated in Britain some 200 years ago, comes from the official name of the sport, “association football.” As other versions of the game evolved to include Rugby Football, it is believed the Brits adopted colloquialisms to distinguish each game.13 Jun 2014
Soccer is the biggest global sport and a top 10 sport in all countries measured, as well as the dominant sport in South America, Europe and Africa. The world cup final is watched by an estimated 600 million people.
1920s
Soccer—or football as it's known most everywhere else—has been played on American soil since at least the late 1800s. But the sport as we know it today had its first wave of popularity in the 1920s. This was outlined in a fascinating Slate piece four years ago in the run up to the last World Cup.
England
Although the game of soccer has been around for more than 2,000 years, soccer as we know it today is traced back to England. The game was once played in ancient China, Greece, Rome, and Japan but with different rules and variations.
Modern soccer was invented in England around the 1860s when rugby was detached from soccer. However, the earliest forms of soccer are recorded in the second century B.C. in China during the Han Dynasty, where an ancient form of soccer was Tsu Chu was played.
