Answer 1

Answer:

Scientific Instrument: invention of the telescope, microscope, barometer, thermometer.

Medicine: Vaccines, penicillin, insulin, aspirin, etc.

Chemistry: Discovery of electrons, radioactivity, fire, making of glass.

What is the relation between chemistry and medicine?

Chemistry and Medicine are extremely interrelated! I will try to keep it simple, but also provide enough detail to satiate deeper interest.

Life itself is a conglomeration of biochemistry and physics— where physics governs the movement of molecules (biophysics, biophysical chemistry), and biochemistry is the study of the chemistry inside of living things; it explains how we see things, feel things, etcetera.

Other medically-related disciplines (like neuroscience or biology) all rely on biochemistry and physics to work. For example, I’ll briefly discuss sight. From physics we understand how our eye lenses work to refract light to focus it on our retina— from biochemistry we understand that this light activates a specific receptor, and there is a cellular signaling cascade pathway that ensues with the end being the initiation of an action potential, which ends up activating a specific part of our brain and through chemical interactions, we produce an image that we see. This whole process is incomprehensibly fast, and a true testament to the complexity of life.

Now onto Medicine. In a gross oversimplification, medicine works to exploit the biochemistry, or alter it to produce the desired effect. So, let’s discuss the class of antidepressants called SSRI’s, or Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors.

The biochemistry behind this is as follows: there is a small gap between our nerve cells called a synapse. To communicate with each other or to pass-along a signal, nerve cells (neurons) release neurotransmitters. These molecules are released into the synapse, where some bind to receptors on the adjacent neuron (to pass-along a signal), and others are either broken down or transported back into the neuron that released them originally, in a process called re-uptake.

This is where the medicine comes in. Drugs like SSRI’s target this process, and stop it. This allows more neutransmitters, in this case serotonin, to remain in the synapse, and available to bind to receptors on the adjacent neuron. Serotonin elicits responses that are associated with happiness. By preventing re-uptake, there is more serotonin to elicit these responses, and thus, we feel happier.

Now theres another part of chemistry to this: the drug itself. The making of drugs is through a process called synthetic chemistry. The drug has to be able to bind to a protein, vesicle, or receptor to prevent re-uptake, so the drug must be designed and synthesized accordingly. This is the kind of work that I do as a Medical Synthetic Chemist, though my work is in creating new, safer, more effective cancer chemotherapeutics— as opposed to drugs like antidepressants.

This is just one of many ways chemistry and medicine overlap. In summary, medicine relies heavily on chemistry and biochemistry; because after all, we treat illness and injury mostly with chemicals (painkillers, sedatives, sleeping pills, chemotherapy, even Neosporin and aloe-gel, to name a few).

In many countries, including the United States, governors, lieutenant governors, and attorney generals are elected in state-level elections, but their roles and responsibilities are related to the governance and administration of the state, which is part of the federal or national system of government. It is crucial to remember that North Korea is a very authoritarian state and that open criticism of the government is not accepted. The propaganda apparatus of the nation aims to establish a cult of personality around the ruling Kim family by portraying them as infallible and untouchable.

It is difficult to determine the true feelings of North Korean residents towards their leader, Kim Jong-il, given the country's extreme authoritarianism and the severe limits on press freedom and free speech.

The goal of the regime's propaganda machine is to elevate the Kim family to the status of an invincible cult of personality, and any criticism or dissent is harshly punished. It is also difficult to gather reliable information on the residents' opinions because the nation is essentially cut off from the outside world and its citizens are subject to strict government control and surveillance.

Speaking negatively about one's leader or the government was not acceptable, and North Korean civilians were subject to severe government supervision and censorship.

FROM THE GREAT DEBATERS. Should the Wiley college debate team have agreed to debate Oklahoma City college at a location off campus? Why or why not?

Answers

The decision of whether to debate off-campus or not would have depended on the team's goals and values.

What is debate off-campus?

By agreeing to debate off-campus, the team could have demonstrated the power of their arguments and the value of equal rights and opportunities for all.

The decision of whether the Wiley College debate team should have agreed to debate Oklahoma City College off-campus is a complex one and depends on several factors.

On the one hand, agreeing to debate off-campus could have been seen as a compromise of the team's principles and a submission to segregationist policies. By agreeing to debate off-campus, the team would have implicitly acknowledged the legitimacy of segregation and discrimination, which would have been a setback for the civil rights movement.

On the other hand, by refusing to debate off-campus, the team may have missed an opportunity to promote their cause and showcase their talent to a wider audience. By engaging in debate and winning against segregationist opponents, the team could have demonstrated the power of their arguments and the value of equal rights and opportunities for all.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to debate off-campus or not would have depended on the team's goals and values. If their main priority was to stand up against segregation and discrimination, they may have refused to debate off-campus. If their priority was to spread their message and prove their worth as debaters, they may have agreed to debate off-campus.

In the context of the movie "The Great Debaters," the team ultimately decides to debate Oklahoma City College off-campus but not without challenging the segregationist policies of the time and making a stand for their principles.

The Tang Dynasty oversaw the construction of the Grand Canal, which connected the Yangtze River in the south with the Yellow River in the north. This river helped to promote trade and commerce in China by offering an effective route of transporting commodities from the north to the south.

They promoted overseas trade and merchants: The Tang Dynasty promoted foreign trade by making the port of Guangzhou (Canton) the main hub for international trade. More international merchants came to China to conduct business as a result of the government issuing licenses and protecting foreign merchants and their merchandise. here are the 2 documents

Answers

According to the question, these two readings provide a picture of how Americans responded to dramatic changes that were taking place during the first half of 19th century.

First reading-

It speaks about mill girls. How they labour for around 10 months a year to provide money for the boys in their family or even a friend in the hopes that they may enrol them in school so they can receive an education.

For the tasks they performed, the women received a pitiful wage. They often only received one dollar every week in pay.

In a later section of the chapter, it is explained why women are now valued financially and why they were not given greater attention.

Second reading-

The second reading was from Henry David Thoreau's book Walkden.

"Walden" was written by Henry David Thoreau. It illustrates the way Americans interacted with nature and how they lived in the country, emphasizing the value of living alone.

Both works discuss a time in American history when citizens had to react to the tremendous changes occurring in the first half of the nineteenth century, when businesses employed people for low-paying positions and employees toiled for long hours in ill circumstances.

Conclusion-

Hence, together the two readings helped paint a picture of how women had a role in how Americans reacted to the seismic shifts that occurred throughout the first part of the nineteenth century. These significant improvements would not have taken place without women.

The ruling effectively granted businesses the power to personally support candidates for election or defeat by spending money on electioneering communications (even incorporated non-profit organisations).

Compare the figure of Christ in one of the Romanesque tympana to a representation of Christ in Early Christian art . How does the figure look different, and -- importantly -- why?

Answers

The figure of Christ in a Romanesque tympanum is significantly different than that of Early Christian art.

What is Romanesque tympanum?

Romanesque tympanum is an ornamental carving found above the lintel or entrance of a Romanesque church or building. They are often decorated with biblical scenes and symbols, and serve to introduce visitors to the building’s purpose. The tympanum was a popular form of decoration during the Romanesque period (10th-12th centuries). The most common form of Romanesque tympanum is a carved stone relief, often featuring a central figure surrounded by a variety of other figures and symbols.

In Early Christian art, Christ is usually portrayed in a very static and hieratic manner, often with a halo or a cross behind him. He is usually shown in a frontal, symmetrical pose, with a long, slender body, and a tranquil facial expression.
