One of the deadliest animals on earth is the rough skinned newt. It produces highly toxic skin toxins. In the 1970s, three hunters were found dead while camping in Western Oregon when they accidentally boiled a rough skinned newt in their coffee pot. Scientists discovered that they were becoming more toxic due to a common predator: the garter snake. As garter snakes were growing more immune to their toxins, rough skinned newts were growing more toxic in what is known as an “evolutionary arms race”.

Though the genes for the garter snake immunity are most likely polygenic, however, let us assume that the immunity is caused by a single dominant allele for this exercise. Those without the dominant gene (the recessive genotype), are NOT immune to the toxins of the rough skinned newt.

In 1975, in a population of 88 garter snakes on the coast of Oregon, 54 of them exhibit the recessive genotype are therefore not immune to the rough skinned newt’s toxin.

What is the frequency for the recessive genotype (q^2)?

Evolution is sometimes a controversial topic. Write an essay (minimum 5 short paragraphs) including the following:
What is your opinion about evolution?
Do you think there should be a controversy?
Do you think alternatives to evolution should be taught in schools?
Why or why not?

Answers

"What is your opinion about evolution?"

Evolution is very controversial, I can agree. But in my opinion, evolution is the only explanation for why we have creatures and living things on this planet, makes more sense than some space guy making every single animal and plant in seven days, simply because no one on Earth has that power, and it's downright impossible. I, personally am an Atheist, so my opinion is going to be different than most people's opinions on the matter itself.

"Do you think there should be a controversy?"

Honestly, no. Christians and peoples of other religion get mad because a scientific fact meddled with their original opinion. Now, here's my opinion. It's ok not to accept change at first, that's an expected human reaction. But people, over time, accept change. But it's been 63 years since the theory was first published, and Christian society is still angry that a simple fact had ruined their entire ideology. I wouldn't say believing in God is simply a façade, but I will say that you should be accepting to other people's view of their own world.

Oh yeah, and although I refer evolution as a scientific fact even though the scientific community considers it a theory, is because we have direct evidence for this "theory", so what would be the point of calling it a theory.

"Do you think alternatives to evolution should be taught in schools?"

Depends if the school is more science-based or religiously-based. Until people can learn and accept the changes that have taken place in society, alternatives for evolution, like the Genesis chapter from "The Sacred Text", would probably have to be considered for Christian schooling. Meanwhile, more science centric schools can still teach evolution, even if Karen complains about it.

Well there's my essay. When I first started my account, I had asked two questions like this one. I honestly enjoyed writing my feelings, it's really rare when I get to find questions like these on Brainly. Thanks!

O A only if the mutation occurs in the sex cells B. only if the mutation occurs in the y-chromosome C. only if the parent has an acquired mutation in the autosomal chromosome D. only if both parents do not have the mutation in the sex cells

Answers

Answer:

O A only if the mutation occurs in the sex cells

Explanation:

Mutations can be defined as genetic changes that occur in the DNA sequence of the genome of an organism. Mutations can be classified into two main types: 1-somatic mutations, which occur in somatic cells that form the body of the organism, and 2-germ-line mutations, which occur in sex cells or gametes (i.e., egg and sperm cells). Only germ-line mutations can be passed on to offspring and it occurs when a mutated gamete (either a sperm or an egg) comes together to form a diploid (2n) zygote.

The researchers introduced a small RNA complementary to a portion of the mRNA encoding protein A into the Brec-MUT cells growing in a petri dish. The researchers claim that the treated cells will fail to stimulate blood vessel formation. Based on information provided, provide reasoning to support their claim.

Answers

Answer:

Delivered small RNAs can inhibit protein A production through the RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism, and thus impairs angiogenesis

Explanation:

The pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A is a protease enzyme involved in the formation of new blood vessels by increasing insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) bioavailability. Moreover, small RNAs (<200 nucleotides in length, generally 18 to 30 nucleotides) are non-coding RNA molecules that function in RNA silencing through the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway. Small RNAs are widely used in molecular biology laboratories because they can be delivered into specific cells in order to silence target mRNAs such as, in this case, the mRNA encoding protein A, by complementary base pairing and thereby inducing translational repression. In consequence, mRNAs complementary to delivered small RNAs are silenced through RNAi pathways, i.e., by cleavage of the target mRNA and/or mRNA destabilization.

The short RNA corresponding to a fragment of both the mRNA encoding protein A and B was inserted into Brec-MUT cells that grow in a petri dish by the researchers.

The researchers claim that cells treated with this drug will fail to stimulate blood vessel formation by trying to induce a small RNA complementary to the mRNA of A. It may be so because induced small RNA could act as an antagonist to the mRNA of the A protein. This results in the induction of default or faulty proteins that will not promote vascular permeability.
