This can occur in 2 different ways:
1. Allopatric speciation. This is when speciation occurs due to some sort of geographic barrier separates a population into 2 groups. These two groups can then undergo genetic divergence, where each group grows increasingly dissimilar genetically due to random mutations and natural selection acting separately in each group, or from processes such as genetic drift. It is important to recognize that the lack of gene flow between these two groups contributes to the genetic divergence of the groups.
