Diary entry about first experience of taking online classes.

Explanation:

May 12, 2021

Wednesday

Dear diary,

Due to the ongoing pandemic, our college classes were all conducted in online mode. This means that we have to take classes through zoom sessions from our respective houses. Today was the first time I attended classes online and I was rather confused and anxious about the whole thing.

As the class started, we logged in with our email ids and the teacher started the class. It was weird attending lectures online and everyone seems to feel the same way too. But things got better as the class went by, without teachers helping us navigate the class and making us comfortable. Even though it's not the same as physical classroom lectures, the experience was interesting.

Hoping for the best.

Love,

Mandy.

The purpose of a text can be to entertain, inform, or persuade.

A text that is meant to entertain is often a piece of fiction, such as a novel, or a comic book. A text that is meant to information could be a scientific report or any piece of text that provides accurate information. A text that is meant to persuade will use a different tone and wording, as it will aim to convince the audience, most likely through an emotional appeal, as a politician might do during a campaign speech.

The word "vegan" (,begin bold, vee, end bold, • gun) can refer to a particular kind of diet or the person who follows that diet. Vegans typically do not consume animal products, so their diets avoid meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or dairy products. There are various reasons that people decide to become vegans; one reason is for the perceived health benefits of a vegan diet.

Many experts say that a well-planned vegan diet is healthy, but vegans must choose their foods wisely. The animal and dairy products in a non-vegan diet provide important nutrients such as vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D. Vegans must find plant-based sources for these nutrients. For example, vegans can get vitamin B12 from fortified,superscript,1,baseline, breakfast cereals or foods made from soybeans. Many dark-green vegetables contain calcium; so do red beans and calcium-fortified fruit juices. Vegans can get vitamin D from fortified soy milk or rice milk. A healthy vegan diet includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and beans.

People who want to switch to a vegan diet should start slowly. They should learn everything they can about being vegan and discuss their plan with a doctor or a dietician.,superscript,2,baseline, They should read food labels to see which foods contain animal products and look through a vegan cookbook. Then they might try a few popular vegan foods, such as veggie burgers. Many of the foods they ate before can remain part of a vegan diet. Vegans can still enjoy a crisp salad and a shiny, red apple!

Question
Which pair of statements, best expresses two main ideas in the passage?

1. Most people who become vegan make the switch because a vegan diet is healthier than other diets. Vegans can get all essential nutrients by including a variety of vegetables and fruits in their daily diet.

2. The term "vegan" refers to people whose diets do not include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or dairy products. People should not switch to a vegan diet without first learning how to prepare vegan foods.

3. A vegan diet may lack nutrients such as vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D that meat-based diets provide. People who become vegan discover that their new diet includes many of the same foods they ate before.

4. Vegans must make sure that their diets include a balance of proper nutrients from plant-based sources. People who want to become vegan should educate themselves about the diet and make gradual changes.

The Cranberry Connection

“What is this book?” Anna mumbled to herself as she helped her mom look through old boxes. They had belonged to her grandparents who died when Anna was a baby.

“I think I found Grandma’s diary,” she told her mother.

Her mother quickly came closer and said, “What a find! I can’t wait to read it. I miss her.” Then seeing Anna’s frown, Mom added, “But you found Grandma’s diary, so you can read it first.”

Nodding happily, Anna read the date on the first entry, August 13, 1953. “How old was Grandma in 1953?” she asked.

Her mom thought for a minute. “She must have been about nine, the same age as you are right now.”

Anna had seen photos of her grandparents, but they looked so old that it was hard to imagine that her grandma was ever nine.

Anna read the first entry:
The county fair is only two weeks away and today I’m going to practice making Mother’s cranberry bread. Last time, the dough was so thick that I couldn’t even knead it! I get mad at myself when my baking turns out wrong, but Mother keeps telling me to have more patience. I’ll use less flour today and hope for the best.

A young girl kneels next to her trunk and a few boxes to write in her diary.

Then Anna realized that her mother made cranberry bread, too, and the recipe for that bread must have been passed down through the generations. Anna suddenly wanted to learn how to make it, and quickly asked, “Mom, could you help me make cranberry bread today?”

She could tell by the long pause that her mom was a little surprised by her request. “I guess we could make some,” she replied, “but you’ll have to do the kneading because my shoulder is sore from all this work.”

“I’ll do it all,” Anna told her. “Just make sure I’m doing it exactly the way you do it.”

Her mom pointed out, “Anna, you don’t have a lot of . . .”

“Patience!” Anna interrupted. “I’m just like Grandma! But I want to learn how to make that bread just like you do it—and like your mother did it, and her mother did it, and . . .”

Laughing, her mom held up her hand. “I get it, but I’m wondering why you’re suddenly so interested in that bread. Maybe I’d better read the diary before we start!”

Anna smiled and handed the dusty diary to her mom. “I don’t want to break the cranberry connection,” she said. “I have to be ready to teach my own kids how to make that bread!”

Why does Cappelli claim that it doesn't help to choose a popular major or

occupation-specific major?

A The majors aren't competitive as so many students are going into

them.

B Students are more likely to

perform better if they choose a major they like.

C Students are unlikely to stick with one major throughout their

college career.

D The world is always changing and

needing workers in various fields.

Answers

Answer:

A.

Explanation:

"Will the 'right' college major get you a job?" is an article written by Glenn Altschuler. In the article, the author talks about the pros and cons of choosing major in the college, especially the popular major or occupation-specific major.

Peter Cappelli, a professor of management, claims that choosing a popular major or occupation-specific major will not help. In paragraph 16 and 17, Cappelli draws our attention to the increasing number of enrolment in such majors as petroleum engineering, science, technology, engineering, and maths. He remarks that a large number of students enroll in these programs but only few percent of these students actually make earning after graduating.

The conclusion of the article is that one should choose the major of his/he interest and what they like the most. Rather than choosing a major that is not of your interest.

Therefore, option A is correct.

Which types of descriptive language are used in the excerpt?

metaphor and hyperbole
strong verbs and simile
sensory details and precise adjectives
precise adjectives and strong verbs

Answers

Answer:

Precise adjectives (polished, sharpened, large, florid, untrammeled) and strong verbs would be my guess.

Explanation:

Polished, sharpened, large, florid, and untrammeled are all good adjectives. The use of verbs is more prominent than the application of sensory details in my opinion, but that would also work.

Descriptive language is used in the excerpt for precise adjectives and strong verbs.

What do you mean by descriptive language?

Descriptive language refers to the technique that is used in writing and speaking involving a detailed description of a person.

The types of descriptive language that are used in the excerpt are precise adjectives and strong verbs.
