Write a story which illustrates the saying excessive love of money can lead one into danger

Answers

Answer 1
There was once a man named John who was obsessed with money. He would do anything to make more of it, even if it meant putting himself in danger. One day, John heard about a treasure buried deep in the forest and decided to go find it.

John spent weeks in the forest, digging and searching for the treasure. Finally, he found it. It was a large chest filled with gold coins and precious jewels. John was overjoyed and immediately started counting his riches.

As he was counting, he heard a noise. It was a group of bandits who had been watching him for days. They had been waiting for him to find the treasure so they could steal it from him. John tried to run, but the bandits caught him.

They demanded that he hand over the treasure, but John refused. He thought he could fight them off, but he was wrong. The bandits were too strong for him. They beat him up and took the treasure.

John was left alone in the forest, battered and bruised. He realized that his excessive love of money had led him into danger. He had risked his life for something that was not worth it. In the end, he lost everything.

From that day on, John learned to appreciate what he had and not to be too greedy. He realized that money was not everything and that there were more important things in life.

Passage 1
2
The Farmer and the Peasant
There once lived a well-to-do farmer and opposite his house lived a poor peasant; and the peasant thought if he carried on his cultivation just as the farmer, he might get more food. So every day he visited the farmer's house and heard what work he would do the next day. He imitated the farmer exactly: he plowed and sowed and transplanted when the farmer did and the result was good, for that year he got a fine crop. So he resolved to continue to copy the
tarmer.
The selfish farmer suspected what the peasant was doing and did not like it, so he resolved to teach the peasant to mind his own business. In January they both planted sugar cane, and when the crop was half grown the peasant heard the farmer give orders to put the leveler over the crop and break it down. This was only a pretense, but the peasant went away and crushed his sugar cane crop. It turned out that each root of the peasant's sugar cane then sent up a number of shoots and in the end he had a much heavier crop than the farmer. The farmer continued with his tricks and soon the peasant was sowing roasted pulse. Yet the few seeds of the peasant's which germinated produced such fine plants that when he came to thresh, he had more grain than the farmer. So in a few years, the peasant

OD. The farmer pretends to be friends with the peasant.

Answers

The emphasized aspect about the rich farmer in Passage 2 that seems to be missing from Passage 1 is that the farmer sees farming as a competition to be won.

In Passage 2, the farmer is determined to beat the peasant and is willing to trick him into trying his methods in order to maintain his superiority. This competitive nature is not explicitly stated in Passage 1, although it is implied in the farmer's suspicion and dislike of the peasant's attempts to copy him.

However, in Passage 2, it is clear that the farmer's motivation for farming is not just to provide for himself, but also to be better than those around him. This emphasis on competition highlights a negative aspect of human nature, where individuals are more concerned with their own success than with helping others.

What three elements make up the Exposition of the story?
A. Characters, Setting, and Climax
B. Setting, Rising Action, and Climax
C. Setting, Time, Characters
D. Characters, Conflict, and Rising Action

Answers

Characters, Conflict, and Rising Action) accurately represents the three elements typically found in the exposition of a story. Option D

The three elements that typically make up the exposition of a story are setting, characters, and conflict. Therefore, the correct answer is option D: Characters, Conflict, and Rising Action.

Characters: The exposition introduces the main characters of the story. It provides information about their backgrounds, relationships, and roles within the narrative. The characters are essential in setting up the story's foundation and establishing the groundwork for the events to come.

Conflict: The exposition presents the central conflict or problem that the characters will face throughout the story. This conflict can be internal (within a character) or external (between characters or with the environment). The exposition sets up the initial situation and introduces the conflict that drives the plot forward.

Rising Action: While not explicitly mentioned in the options, rising action is a crucial element of the exposition.

It refers to the series of events and complications that arise from the initial conflict, leading to the development of the plot. The exposition sets the stage for the rising action, laying the groundwork for subsequent events and building tension and suspense.

Option A (Characters, Setting, and Climax) is incorrect because the climax is a later stage in the plot and not part of the exposition.

Option B (Setting, Rising Action, and Climax) is also incorrect because the rising action and climax occur after the exposition.

Option C (Setting, Time, Characters) is not the correct answer because it omits the crucial element of conflict, which is an essential component of the exposition. Option D

( Hume question ) ( Enquiry section IV ) What is the difference between “ relations of ideas “ and “ matters of fact “. Give an example of each. What kind of reasoning is required in order to arrive at conclusions about “ matters of fact “

Answers

The difference between "relations of ideas“ and “ matters of fact “ is "Relations of ideas" refer to truths that can be known through reasoning and logic alone, without relying on sensory experience. On the other hand, "matters of fact" are contingent truths about the world that are based on empirical evidence and sensory experience. Example of  "relations of ideas“ is in mathematics, the statement "2 + 2 = 4" is a relation of ideas. Example of “ matters of fact “ is the statement "The sun will rise tomorrow" is a matter of fact.

Inductive reasoning reasoning is required in order to arrive at conclusions about “ matters of fact “

In David Hume's "Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding," Section IV, he distinguishes between two types of knowledge: "relations of ideas" and "matters of fact."

"Relations of ideas" refer to truths that can be known through reasoning and logic alone, without relying on sensory experience. These are propositions that are true by definition or can be derived from definitions or logical inferences. For example, in mathematics, the statement "2 + 2 = 4" is a relation of ideas. It is true based on the concept of addition and the definitions of numbers.

On the other hand, "matters of fact" are contingent truths about the world that are based on empirical evidence and sensory experience. They are propositions that can be verified or falsified through observation and experience. For example, the statement "The sun will rise tomorrow" is a matter of fact. It is based on our past observations and experiences of the sun rising every day.

Reasoning about matters of fact requires inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning involves making generalizations or predictions based on observed patterns or past experiences. It involves moving from specific instances to general conclusions. However, it is important to note that conclusions based on matters of fact are always probabilistic rather than certain, as our experiences may not capture all possible instances or future events.

In summary, "relations of ideas" are truths based on logical reasoning, while "matters of fact" are contingent truths derived from empirical evidence and require inductive reasoning to arrive at conclusions about them.

How does barriers to entry impact on small business in South Africa

Barriers to entry refer to obstacles or conditions that make it difficult for new businesses to enter a particular industry or market. In the context of small businesses in South Africa, barriers to entry can have a significant impact on their establishment and growth.

One major barrier to entry for small businesses in South Africa is the high cost of entry. Starting a business often requires substantial financial resources, including capital for equipment, premises, licenses, and permits. Limited access to funding and financial institutions' stringent requirements can hinder aspiring entrepreneurs from entering the market.

Another barrier is the regulatory environment. Complex and time-consuming bureaucratic processes, along with burdensome regulations and licensing requirements, can discourage small businesses from starting or expanding. Compliance costs and legal complexities can disproportionately affect small enterprises that have limited resources and expertise.

Furthermore, the dominance of established businesses and market concentration can act as barriers to entry. Large corporations may have significant market power, making it challenging for small businesses to compete effectively. Established companies may also engage in anti-competitive practices that further restrict market access for new entrants.

Addressing barriers to entry is crucial for promoting small business growth in South Africa. Simplifying regulatory processes, improving access to finance, and fostering fair competition can encourage entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic development. Additionally, providing support mechanisms such as training, mentorship, and access to business networks can help small businesses overcome barriers and thrive in the market.

What piece of information in passage 2 is different from passage 1?

A. Making compost requires prior knowledge and training.

B. Compost requires a lot of sunlight.

C. The right equipment is required to make compost.

D. Compost is good for nurturing plants

Passage 1

Composting: Nourishment for Nature

Plants require regular nourishment for healthy growth, and gain most of the nourishment from their surroundings. But humans can play a part in aiding their growth too. Composting is a method of boosting plant growth and nourishment by adding a nutrient-rich mixture into the soil to enrich the soil with carbon and nitrogen.

Almost any food item can be used to create compost. As much as 30 percent of household waste can be converted into compost. Creating compost is an extremely easy process. All one needs to do is gather items such as table scraps, wood scraps, tealeaves, coffee beans, corncobs, eggshells, manure—an organic matter made from animal feces, and other similar items, and mix them well into the soil. Plenty of sunlight, the right equipment, and a good compost bin can create a decent batch of compost. It serves as an excellent alternative for chemical fertilizers.

Composting enriches the soil and prevents pollution. It also keeps the soil moist and prevents plants from contracting diseases. Composting is a relaxing and fulfilling activity that even teenagers can attempt. It will not only give them immense joy to watch their plants grow beautifully, but also educate them about recycling waste products.

Passage 2

The Task of Composting

Though organic compost is beneficial for nurturing plants, the task of composting itself isn't easy. Composting requires time and effort to compile the right mixture, and one has to be willing to work on making the compost every day. It is also important to have the right equipment and preserve the compost properly. There is always the risk of insects and rodents damaging the homemade compost.

Additionally, the effort put into making the compost does not always take root. Composting requires proper space and climatic conditions. Cold or dry weather is not ideal for compost, unless one constantly keeps the pile moist. Compost requires a lot of sunlight, which is not always available during winter. Lack of sunlight hampers the decomposition of materials in the compost.

Lastly, creating the right compost requires a trained hand and an expert's guidance. Using wrong kitchen ingredients such as bone scraps, whole eggs, fatty foods, or oil in the compost may damage the plant. One should especially be cautious about using manure made from cat or dog feces in the compost to grow vegetables as it can contain bacteria that can cause diseases in the plant. Nutrient imbalance in the compost could also affect the plants as too much of nitrogen or carbon could corrupt the soil.
