1. What is the purpose to add light and shadows to a drawing?

The purpose of adding light and shadows to a drawing is to give a drawing more depth and give it a certain look. Such as realistic. Realistic drawings may have more shadowing rather than light because you want to really emphasize the depth of the drawing and the shadows that fall in certain areas. Artists use values to translate the light and shadows they see into shading, thus creating the illusion of a third dimension. Therefore creating the look you want.

2. What are things you have to practice to master shading?

Things you have to practice to master shading is pressure control. The reason behind this is because when you shade, depending on how light or dark the shade you wish is, you put more or less pressure onto the pencil.

3. How can you achieve realistic painting?

To achieve a realistic painting you have to use 8 key factors. Those 8 factors are precision, values, contrast, edges, transitions, temperature, colors, and saturation. Precision is accurately drawing from observation, Values is brightness or light, Contrast is the range is brightness values, Edges are sharp or soft sides, Transitions are in brightness values, colors, texture, temperature, and so on, Temperature is warm or cool colors, Colors are the object's fingerprint, and finally, Saturation is how sharp and rich the colors are in your drawing or painting.

4. What are the ways that you can practice pressure control?

You can practice pressure control by drawing smooth, gradual value scales. Then apply the gradual shading to simple objects. Use real-life objects and observe how light interacts with them.

5. How can you achieve smooth shading?

You can achieve smooth shading by using a softer grade pencil such as 2B, using a stump technique (smudging), and using a certain type of paper. The texture of the paper can play a large role in smooth shading because paper can be smooth or rough.

6. Does your pencil grip affect your shading? Explain.

Your pencil grip affects your shading a lot. The upright position of the pencil allows for accurate shading, utilizing the tip rather than the side of the pencil. If you have more pressure on the pencil, the lines you make will become darker, allowing for deeper shading. If you have a lighter grip on your pencil, it allows for brighter lines, making a soft shading.

7. Why is understanding the light behavior important in drawing?

The understanding of light behavior is important when drawing because understanding how forms behave in different light conditions can help you achieve added realism in your work. Painters treat light as an addition to the picture, an atmosphere-maker. It can easily get the impression that the object has a universal form, then paper without proper lighting. It can easily change the mood of the painting or drawing you're seeing.

The 7 elements of light are line, color, value, shape, form, space, and texture.

Defined as one of the seven elements of art, next to line, shape, space, form, texture, and color, the value in art is a quality or a value of light and dark of a certain shade or tone. In two-dimensional artworks, the application of value can help in giving a shape the illusion of mass or volume or it can give the entire composition a sense of lighting and depth. It is a well-known fact that the best way to attract the eye is to place the lightest element against a dark element. This, not only creates the focal point of interest, but it can produce a dramatic effect. Technique is defined by a clear tonal contrast exemplified by very high-keyed whites, placed directly against very low-keyed darks. The artist’s manipulation of all the art elements is crucial to the understanding of the produced artwork. How the author draws his line, creates various textures, or to what medium he/she turns to defines the aesthetic language of each author. This is also relevant in the debate about value in art, and the arena of black and white photography is frequently used to best illustrate the value in action. It is here that one can best visualize how the infinitive variations of gray suggest planes and textures, and how through these, the idea of the value, defined through contrast is achieved
