In the ETC the electrons are passed on through a series of proteins in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. The process of ions (often H+ ions, commonly referred to as protons) diffusing across a membrane that is selectively permeable is known as chemiosmosis. Chemiosmosis produces a concentration gradient of a diffusing ion from across membrane, similar to osmosis. Potential energy that can perform work is present in concentration gradients.
Thus, energy produced by H+ travelling via ATP synthase and down a concentration gradient is used by chemiosmosis. ADP is phosphorylated with this energy to create ATP.
