“Lost Generation”
by Jonathan Reed

I am part of a lost generation.
And I refuse to believe that
I can change the world.
I realize this may be a shock, but
“Happiness comes from within”
Is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy”
So in thirty years, I will tell my children
They are not the most important thing in my life.
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
Work

Is more important than
Family
I tell you this:
Once upon a time

Families stayed together
But this will not be true in my era.
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
Thirty years from now, I will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of my divorce.
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making.
In the future,
Environmental destruction will be the norm.

No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this Earth.
It will be evident that

My generation is apathetic and lethargic.
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.

And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it.

The comedian who delivered the controversial monologue in 1973 was George Carlin, who was known for pushing the boundaries of comedy.

The monologue, entitled “Filthy Words,” consisted of seven words that were deemed by the FCC to be “indecent” and inappropriate for broadcast. The monologue was aired on a radio station in New York, and the FCC fined the station for violating their regulations.

This prompted Carlin and the station to challenge the FCC’s authority to censor their programming. The case eventually made its way to the Supreme Court where the court ruled in favor of the FCC, finding that the FCC had the authority to regulate indecent language on broadcast media.

The other events listed, such as the March on Washington, the Democratic National Convention violence, and the Kent State University killings, were all directly related to the anti-war movement. The March on Washington was a massive demonstration against the war that took place in 1967, while the Democratic National Convention violence occurred during protests against the Democratic Party's nomination of a pro-war candidate in 1968. How did the racial problems in the US in the 1940s-50s change the perception of the US abroad?

Answers

Answer: Scholars of American politics often assume World War II liberalized white racial attitudes. This conjecture is generally premised on the existence of an ideological tension between a war against Nazism and the maintenance of white supremacy at home, particularly the Southern system of Jim Crow. A possible relationship between the war and civil rights was also suggested by a range of contemporaneous voices, including academics like Gunnar Myrdal and activists like Walter White and A. Philip Randolph. However, while intuitively plausible, this relationship is generally not well verified empirically. A common flaw is the lack of attention to public opinion polls from the 1940s. Using the best available survey evidence, I argue the war's impact on white racial attitudes is more limited than is often claimed. First, I demonstrate that for whites in the mass public, while there is some evidence of liberalization on issues of racial prejudice, this generally does not extend to policies addressing racial inequities. White opposition to federal anti-lynching legislation actually seems to have increased during the war. Second, there is some evidence of racial moderation among white veterans, relative to their counterparts who did not serve. White veterans were more supportive of anti-lynching legislation in the immediate postwar period, and they offered stronger support for black voting rights in the early 1960s. However, they were not distinguishable on many other issues, including measures of racial prejudice and attitudes toward segregation.

How did humans impact the environment through agriculture and industrialization?

Answers

Humans have had a significant impact on the environment through the development and expansion of agriculture and industrialization. Agriculture, which began around 10,000 years ago, allowed humans to shift from a hunting and gathering lifestyle to a settled one where crops and livestock were cultivated and raised for food.

Agriculture has allowed humans to produce more food, which has helped to support a growing population. However, it has also led to deforestation, soil degradation, water pollution, and the loss of biodiversity. The clearing of forests for farmland reduces the carbon-absorbing capacity of trees, which contributes to climate change. Soil degradation occurs when intensive farming practices deplete the soil of nutrients, making it less productive and more susceptible to erosion. The use of fertilizers and pesticides to increase crop yields can lead to water pollution when these chemicals leach into nearby water sources. The loss of biodiversity occurs when monoculture, or the growing of a single crop, is practiced, which reduces the variety of plant and animal species in an area.

Industrialization has brought about numerous technological advancements and economic benefits, but it has also had significant negative impacts on the environment. Industrialization has led to increased air and water pollution, deforestation, and the depletion of natural resources. The burning of fossil fuels to power machines and factories releases carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the air, contributing to climate change. Industrial processes also generate hazardous waste, which can contaminate water sources and harm wildlife. Deforestation occurs when forests are cleared for building factories or harvesting wood for manufacturing. The depletion of natural resources occurs when non-renewable resources, such as oil and coal, are extracted at a rate faster than they can be replenished.

Answers

Yes, it is true that Stephen A. Douglas proposed the organization of a huge new territory known as Nebraska with the intention of opening up Native American areas to provide a potential northern route for the transcontinental railroad. The proposed territory, known as the Nebraska Territory, would have been organized under the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.

Douglas argued that the act would allow for popular sovereignty, or the right of the people in the territory to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery.

However, the proposal was met with intense opposition from both abolitionists and pro-slavery advocates, as it threatened to upset the balance between free and slave states that had been established by the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The resulting conflict would ultimately contribute to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Despite the controversy surrounding the proposal, the organization of the Nebraska Territory did eventually take place in 1854. The organization of this territory played a significant role in shaping the political and social landscape of the American West.

Before the invention of paper in China, the Chinese used various materials for writing and recording their ideas. These materials included:

Oracle bones: These were bones, mostly from turtles or cattle, that were used for divination and record-keeping. Inscriptions were carved onto the bones, and then heat was applied to create cracks that were interpreted as divinatory messages.

Bamboo and wooden slips: These were thin strips of bamboo or wood that were used for writing on. Characters were written with a brush and ink on the smooth surface of the slips. The slips were then tied together with string to create books.

Silk: Silk was used for writing, but it was expensive and therefore not widely used. It was often used for important documents, such as imperial edicts.

Bronze: Bronze was used to create inscriptions on vessels and other objects. Inscriptions were created by carving characters onto the surface of the bronze and then filling them in with wax or pigment.

Shells and stones: These were also used for writing, although they were not as popular as other materials. Characters were carved onto the surface of the shells or stones using a sharp tool.

Overall, before the invention of paper, the Chinese used a variety of materials for writing, but these materials were limited in their availability, durability, and practicality. Nicholas II attempted to quell the unrest by C: distributing land to peasants. During his reign, Russia experienced significant social and political upheaval. Nicholas II faced growing discontent from various segments of society, including the working class and the peasantry, who demanded land reform and greater representation in government.

In response to these demands, Nicholas II initiated the Stolypin agrarian reforms, which aimed to distribute land to peasants and transform the rural economy. The objective of these reforms was to improve the living conditions of the peasants, increase agricultural productivity, and ultimately alleviate social unrest. The reforms allowed peasants to own land individually rather than collectively and offered financial incentives to encourage them to move to sparsely populated regions in order to increase agricultural output.

However, the Stolypin reforms were not entirely successful in addressing the grievances of the Russian people. Many peasants were still dissatisfied with the slow pace of land distribution and the inadequate amount of land that was allocated to them. Additionally, the reforms did not significantly improve the political representation of the lower classes or address their broader concerns. As a result, social unrest persisted, and Nicholas II was eventually forced to abdicate in 1917 during the Russian Revolution.

If Africa was the birthplace of humans, why wasn't it the birthplace and center of civilization?

Answers

Answer:

For a start, humanity was all over the planet before civilization started. The earliest civilizations began around 5500 years ago, but there’d already been humans all over every continent except Antarctica from about 10,000 years ago, when expanding populations in the Americas reached Tierra del Fuego.

Moreover, there were at least six “cradles of civilization.” Complex urban society was independently developed in Mesopotamia, Peru, Egypt, India, China, and Mexico. So it’s not really the cradle of civilization.

Anyway, humanity didn’t really leave them. Some people did, of course. One thing civilizations do sometimes is form armies and go conquer their neighbors. Other times they send out merchants to do business in foreign lands, and some of them settle there. Mostly, though, when it comes to early civilization, what spread out wasn’t people, but rather ideas. Useful and powerful concepts of social complexity were adopted by neighboring peoples as they saw fit, leading to the rise of new and similar but not identical civilizations around the core of earlier ones.

So, then, humanity did not leave the cradles of civilization. Humanity was already all over the planet long before that happened. What emerged from those places was political control and cultural influence.

Assessment
It’s very easy for people to overlook the power of ideas, and the Renaissance is one of the clearer examples of this. For more than a hundred years, history teachers have taught students that the Renaissance began with humanism, with the shift toward a celebration of human potential rather than a focus on human limitations. But if you ask most adults what the Renaissance was, they will answer with something along the lines of, “That was when Europeans started making pretty art again.” You can see a beautiful painting. You can’t see the change in perspective that inspired the person to be an artist in the first place.

To help make this connection, your assignment is to identify four specific achievements from the Renaissance and then to consider how humanism would have helped inspire each of them. The metaphor of the assignment is a tree, with the achievements as the branches and humanism as the roots.

Directions
Choose four achievements from the Renaissance period (1300-1600). They can be from the lesson or you can research to find them—just make sure they are from the Renaissance!

One in the visual arts (painting and sculpture)
One in literature or poetry
One in science or technology
One additional achievement of your choice in any area (can be a second achievement in one of the areas above)
Describe each achievement and what was new and interesting about it—how it was different from earlier medieval art or science? Your descriptions and explanations need to be only a few complete sentences, but they should use key terms or specialized vocabulary from the lesson and thoroughly explain what the achievement was, what made it new, and one interesting fact about it. You can paste images of your achievements into the assignment, but the descriptions are what your teacher will be grading.

For each achievement, write a brief explanation of how Renaissance humanism might have inspired the person who made it. Explain how humanism could have been the root of the branch you described above.

Example:
In literature, Petrarch wrote his autobiographical Letter to Posterity in the late 1300s. It was only the second autobiography from the whole medieval period. One interesting thing is that in the first sentence, Petrarch says it is doubtful that the person reading will have heard of him because an “obscure name does not go far in time or space.” But we are learning about him on the other side of the earth getting close to a thousand years later.

Answers

One achievement from the Renaissance period in the visual arts is the famous painting of Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. It is known for its realistic portrayal of the subject and the use of sfumato technique to create a smoky effect around the edges.

In literature, William Shakespeare's plays are considered a significant achievement of the Renaissance period. His plays like Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth explored complex human emotions and themes like love, revenge, and ambition.

In science and technology, the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg is a significant achievement of the Renaissance period. It revolutionized the way books were produced and distributed, making knowledge accessible to more people.

In architecture, the dome of the Florence Cathedral by Filippo Brunelleschi is a notable achievement of the Renaissance period. It was the first dome in the world to be constructed using a double shell structure.

in 1940 fulgencio batista won elections by a wide margin. why were cubans frustrated and disillusioned with him by the 1950s?

Answers

Fulgencio Batista won the presidential elections in 1940 by a wide margin and initially enjoyed support from the Cuban people. However, by the 1950s, Cubans became frustrated and disillusioned with him for several reasons.

Firstly, Batista's government was corrupt and authoritarian. He used his power to enrich himself and his allies while suppressing opposition and dissent. This led to widespread dissatisfaction among the Cuban people who felt that their voices were not being heard.
Secondly, Batista's economic policies were not beneficial for the majority of Cubans. His government favored the interests of foreign investors and wealthy elites while neglecting the needs of the poor and working class. This resulted in high levels of poverty and inequality, which further contributed to the disillusionment of the Cuban people.
Thirdly, Batista's government was accused of human rights violations, including torture, arbitrary arrests, and disappearances. These actions were seen as a violation of the basic rights of the Cuban people and further eroded their trust in the government.
Lastly, Batista's government was seen as being subservient to the United States. Many Cubans resented the fact that their country was being used as a playground for American interests and that Batista was more interested in pleasing his American allies than serving the interests of his own people.
In conclusion, the frustrations and disillusionment of the Cuban people with Fulgencio Batista's government by the 1950s were caused by a combination of factors, including corruption, authoritarianism, economic inequality, human rights violations, and subservience to the United States.

A. helped build support for members in the League of Nations
B. supported workers over business owners and large corporations

D. supported American isolationism over involvement in foreign affairs.

Answers

In 1920, Warren Harding won the U.S. presidential election by campaigning on a platform that is supported American isolationism over involvement in foreign affairs. Option D is the correct answer.

Warren Harding campaigned on a platform of isolationism, which meant he believed in minimizing America's involvement in foreign affairs. This was in contrast to the foreign interventionism of President Woodrow Wilson, who had championed the League of Nations.

Harding promised to focus on domestic issues and restore American values and prosperity after the devastation of World War I. He believed that the United States had no business interfering in the affairs of other nations and should instead concentrate on its own economic development.

Harding's isolationist stance was popular with many Americans who were tired of the country's involvement in the Great War and were skeptical of the League of Nations. Harding's campaign also promised to reduce government regulation of business and to promote economic growth through lower taxes and protective tariffs.

This appealed to many business owners and large corporations who were looking for relief after the economic hardships of the war years. Warren Harding's platform centered around isolationism, economic growth, and limited government intervention.

create a graphic organizer like the one below to show the short-term and long-term causes of world war i. to what extent did each factor lead to the outbreak of war? explain.

Answers

World War I was caused by a combination of short-term and long-term factors. The graphic organizer below illustrates the major causes of the war, and their relative significance in the lead-up to the conflict.

Short-term Causes:
- Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
- The Blank Check
- Mobilization Plans
- The Schlieffen Plan

Long-term Causes:
- Alliance System
- Imperialism
- Nationalism
- Militarism

Each of these factors played a role in the outbreak of war, but some were more significant than others. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, for example, was the immediate trigger for the conflict, and led directly to the mobilization of troops and the declaration of war. Similarly, the Blank Check given by Germany to Austria-Hungary, and the mobilization plans of the major powers, contributed to the rapid escalation of tensions and the outbreak of war.

However, the long-term causes of the conflict were equally important. The alliance system, which created a network of interlocking treaties and obligations, meant that a localized conflict could quickly escalate into a wider war. Imperialism and nationalism, which had been driving forces in European politics for decades, created a sense of competition and hostility between the major powers. Finally, militarism, with its emphasis on military strength and preparedness, encouraged a climate of aggression and brinkmanship.

In conclusion, while the short-term causes of World War I were significant, the long-term causes played a more decisive role in the outbreak of war. The complex web of alliances, imperialism, nationalism, and militarism had created a climate of tension and hostility in Europe, and it was only a matter of time before this boiled over into conflict.

Answers

American workers in the 1840s and 1850s had little power, because the Massachusetts Supreme Court outlawed labor unions in Commonwealth v. Hunt in 1842.

Commonwealth v. Hunt was a landmark case in which the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that labor unions were legal and that workers had the right to strike.

However, the ruling also made it clear that unions could only use peaceful methods to achieve their goals, and that union members could be held liable for damages resulting from strikes or other union activities. This limited the power of unions and made it difficult for workers to collectively bargain for better wages and working conditions.

Furthermore, during this time period, factory owners had significant power over workers because they were able to replace them with immigrant laborers who were willing to work for lower wages. This made it difficult for workers to demand better treatment or to organize unions to protect their rights.

Congress did pass several labor reform bills during this time period, such as the 10-hour workday law in 1847, but these laws were often poorly enforced and did little to improve the overall power of workers.

Socio-economic effects of the Taiping Rebellion?

Answers

The Taiping Rebellion had significant socio-economic effects on China during the mid-19th century. Socioeconomic factors, such as inequality and social unrest, fueled the rebellion, which lasted from 1850 to 1864. The uprising resulted in the deaths of millions of people, disrupting the economy, and destabilizing the Qing Dynasty.

One major socio-economic effect of the Taiping Rebellion was the massive loss of life. Estimates suggest that between 20 to 30 million people died during the conflict, either as direct casualties or due to famine and disease. This loss greatly impacted the Chinese population, with labor shortages affecting agriculture and other industries.

The rebellion also disrupted trade and economic growth. During the conflict, transportation networks, such as canals and roads, were severely damaged, hindering the movement of goods and people. Foreign trade was also affected, as international merchants and investors became wary of the instability in China. This led to a decline in the Chinese economy and increased poverty.

The Taiping Rebellion further exacerbated social tensions in China. The rebels advocated for radical social reforms, such as land redistribution and the abolition of private property. While these ideas resonated with some of the lower classes, they threatened the interests of the wealthy landowners and the Qing Dynasty. As a result, the rebellion intensified social divisions within the country.

Finally, the Taiping Rebellion weakened the Qing Dynasty, which was already struggling with internal corruption and inefficiency. The costs of suppressing the rebellion drained the government's resources, leading to a decline in its ability to govern effectively. This loss of authority contributed to the eventual fall of the dynasty in 1911.

In summary, the Taiping Rebellion had significant socio-economic effects on China, including loss of life, economic disruption, social tensions, and the weakening of the Qing Dynasty.
