That day I walked to Gestapo headquarters. The red-and-black swastika flew from the flagpole. Uniformed Germans were everywhere. It was a well-known fact that people who entered this building did not always leave it again. I entered the building and inquired of the soldiers on guard where this Austrian had his office.

I was told which office, and went directly there. It was a medium-sized room, filled with desks, all occupied by workers who were busily typing. The Austrian's desk was in the corner of the room. He sat behind it facing me when I entered. His name was Karl Silberbauer.

I went up to his desk and stood with my back to the typists. I'd been thrown off by the fact that he wasn't alone, so all I did was stand there, briefly looking into his eyes. Any spoken words would have been audible throughout the room, so I just stood and didn't say a word. All I did was rub my thumb against the two fingers beside it, the index finger and the middle finger – the sign for money.

Story:

The men of Scotland were led by Robert Bruce. English troops had invaded their country. Bruce had bravely fought them with his gallant men, but now he stumbled into a refuge and threw himself down on the floor. He was so very tired of the war. It seemed as though he could not succeed against the invaders.

A lonely Bruce sat and thought and then, in great despair decided, "I'll give it all up."

Just then a spider dropped down from the ceiling, interrupting his thoughts. Bruce wondered what the spider would do. From floor to ceiling was a long way back to the spider's home.

The spider began to crawl up its silvery rope, but slipped and fell again to the ground. Time and again the spider tried to reach its home, but each time it fell, dazed and faint.

After Robert Bruce counted nine attempts, he was sure the spider would try no more. The determined spider, however, worked harder than before. Slowly he got higher and higher until he reached the top. Robert Bruce shouted his praise for the worthy spider.

Then and there Robert Bruce decided he also would not give up. He would keep trying until he should succeed in ridding his country of its terrible enemy. He finally did and became King Robert I of Scotland.
