What was different about the appointment of Secretary of Labor Frances Perkin?

Answers

Answer:

Frances Perkins (1880-1965) achieved historic gains as U.S. secretary of labor under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College, she was a teacher before becoming involved in social reform. She was the first woman to serve on the New York State Industrial Commission, as well as the first to hold a U.S. cabinet post with her appointment by Roosevelt in 1933. Perkins championed many of the policies that became part of the New Deal, and established the Social Security and Fair Labor Standards Acts. After resigning her position in 1945, she wrote a best-selling book and became a professor at Cornell University.

Frances Perkins was a social reformer and U.S. secretary of labor. Perkins grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, where her father ran a stationery business. She was raised in comfortable, middle-class, Republican circumstances. Perkins attended Worcester Classical High School, a largely male institution, and then went to Mount Holyoke College, graduating as president of the class of 1902. (She cherished the Holyoke experience for the rest of her life, serving on the college’s board of governors and remaining involved in decisions affecting the school.) She taught physics and biology for several years, moving to Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1904. There she became involved in the social settlement movement, which kindled the interest in social reform that was to govern her life.

In 1907, Perkins moved to Philadelphia and then to New York City where she worked for social reform groups and simultaneously earned a master’s degree in sociology and economics from Columbia University. In 1910 she became secretary of the New York Consumers’ League where she investigated labor conditions and successfully lobbied the state legislature for a law to restrict the hours of women workers to fifty-four hours a week. Her association with Al Smith during those years led eventually to her appointment in 1918 as the first woman to serve on the New York State Industrial Commission. She became chair of the commission in 1926 and industrial commissioner of the state of

What if the Schlieffen Plan Succeeded? (WW1)

Answers

The Schlieffen Plan, devised a decade before the start of World War I, was a failed strategy for Germany to win World War I. The Schlieffen Plan, devised a decade before the start of World War I, was a failed strategy for Germany to win World War I.

If the Schlieffen Plan had succeeded then assuming the war started on 1 August 1914 then the war probably be finished by 1 October 1914 with an armistice followed by a peace conference. The answers so far have suggested that the Germans would take large chucks of France as part of the peace settlement. However I do not subscribe to this view! The fact that when the war started on 1 August 1914 nobody, French, Germans or Russians had any war aims (They all started to think of war aims in 1915!) and that since it was a short albeit bloody war (although somewhat smaller that the eventually butcher’s bill after four and a quarter years), the Germans would probably go for a treaty that saw a reduction of the French Peacetime Army and the demobilisation and demolition of the French frontier fortifications, and possibly a buffer demilitarised zone on the border.

Assuming the Russians would sue for peace with the French collapse, then a similar peace would be demanded from the Russians.

One should remember that the harsh peace terms demanded by the Allies in 1919 and the theoretical terms sort by the Germans if they had won were based on the number of casualties, especially deaths, and the over all financial cost of four and a quarter years instead of two months. Also remember that the German wars of unification were planned with the aims of taking land to increase the size of and the founding of the German Empire which was not the case with the Great War.

Describe J. Edgar Hoover's efforts to limit the influence of radical groups on Oklahoma students.

Answers

These are J. Edgar Hoover's efforts to limit the influence of radical groups on Oklahoma students.

In a time when the American people were questioning the intervention of the United States in the Vietnam War, students across the country decided to take the streets and protest against the war.

Specifically, students from Oklahoma and  Oklahoma State decided to organize a series of demonstrations against the war.

However, these kinds of demonstrations were limited or prohibited in the state of Oklahoma at that time. So these acts generated some problems for the government.

That is why, J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), decided to intervene. The US federal government has many concerns about these students' protests in Oklahoma.

What Hoover wanted was to diminish the influence of radical students over American youngsters. Hoover wanted to erase those radical ideas from being expanded over other groups of young Americans.

Dissident activities and anti-war protests were not on the agenda of the US federal government.

So Hoover tried to discredit those radical organizations. He falsified letters that were sent to newspapers, such as the case of a supposed father of a student from Oklahoma State University. In the letter, there were accusations of criminal actions perpetrated by students organizations in Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State. The particular targeting group was the Students for a Democratic Society.

We conclude that the US federal government, through Hoover and the FBI, tried to stop all the protests and demonstrations of young people against the Vietnam War.

What does "And Yet the Books" have to do with Nazis

Answers

Answer:

And yet the books will be there on the shelves, separate beings,

That appeared once, still wet

As shining chestnuts under a tree in autumn,

And, touched, coddled, began to live

In spite of fires on the horizon, castles blown up,

Tribes on the march, planets in motion.

“We are, ” they said, even as their pages

Were being torn out, or a buzzing flame

Licked away their letters. So much more durable

Than we are, whose frail warmth

Cools down with memory, disperses, perishes.

I imagine the earth when I am no more:

Nothing happens, no loss, it’s still a strange pageant,

Women’s dresses, dewy lilacs, a song in the valley.

Yet the books will be there on the shelves, well born,

Derived from people, but also from radiance, heights.

Where does the ideas of our "self" originate, and why is it impossible to keep intact?

Answers

Answer: I think the answer is our brain creates self image due to human's ability to reason.

The psychologists Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers played a significant role in popularizing the concept of self-concept in the west. Rogers asserts that everyone aspires to become their "ideal selves." The three parts of the self-concept, according to Carl Rogers, are the ideal self, one's perception of oneself, and one's perception of one's own worth.

What is the self-concept?

A person's self-concept, also known as self-identity, self-perspective, or self-structure, is a set of beliefs about who they are. Self-concept typically embodies the response to the question "Who am I?"

Self-concept can be distinguished from self-awareness, which is the degree to which one's knowledge of one's own attitudes and dispositions is defined, consistent, and currently applicable.

Self-concept, which is made up of one's self-schemas, interacts with other aspects of the self, such as self-esteem, self-knowledge, and the social self to create the whole self.

It encompasses the past, present, and future selves, with the latter serving as a representation of what people believe they might become—either positively or negatively—in the future. Possible selves might serve as rewards for particular behaviors.
